MyVideo [ maɪ'vɪdɪəʊ ] was originally a German-language video portal comparable to YouTube , which was later converted into an information portal and was last operated by maxdome GmbH in Munich , a wholly-owned subsidiary of ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE . Before it was discontinued at the end of September 2017, MyVideo provided background information and trailers on current cinema films and computer games and advertised the content of maxdome's commercial offer.

history

MyVideo was founded in April 2006 by the Samwer brothers as a video portal and, according to their own information, offered 3.8 million video clips, of which around 150,000 were in the premium segment. According to the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Online Forschung e. V. counted MyVideo 2013 with 7.69 million users among the twenty-five internet sites with the highest reach in Germany and recorded up to ten million unique visits per month.

In September 2006, SevenOne Intermedia GmbH, a subsidiary of ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE, initially took over 30 percent of MyVideo. The remaining 70 percent followed in July 2007 at a purchase price of 19 million euros. At that time, the offer was operated by MyVideo Broadband SRL, based in Bucharest, and the platform was, behind YouTube , one of the largest video portals in German-speaking countries.

In 2011, MyVideo started the “MyVideo TV” web project, in which MyVideo content was combined with the formats presented online by the ProSiebenSat1 Group's television stations. In 2013 the company employed 35 people.

On October 30, 2015, ProSiebenSat.1 announced that it would transfer MyVideo on November 30, 2015 to the Berlin- based company Magic Internet Holding GmbH, which had also previously been responsible for the strategic and technical development of the platform. In the course of the transfer, the business model changed: no content was offered by users any more, only content provided by the provider.

On May 2, 2016, the website was converted into an advertising portal without prior notice. As part of this restructuring, all video content was removed from the website, the app was discontinued and part of the workforce was laid off. Since then, the offer has been looked after by maxdome GmbH in Munich and their offer has been advertised in the series and films section.

From January 2017, films and TV series from maxdome's offer could be borrowed or purchased individually via the MyVideo store for a fee; the offer was abandoned with an announcement on August 22, 2017 in favor of the maxdome store and completely discontinued at the end of September 2017.

Magic Internet and Quazer

Quazer Logo (2016)

Magic Internet Holding GmbH, based in Berlin, operated MyVideo as a ProSiebenSat.1 subsidiary until May 2016 and was in charge of the music video platform Ampya (formerly Putpat), which was taken over by TVRL GmbH, and the songtexte.com portal. Magic Internet was responsible for the operation as well as for the development of MyVideo.

After the transfer of the MyVideo brand to Maxdome GmbH, Magic Internet GmbH developed the linear and advertising-financed Internet television offering Quazer , which was operated under the CouchVideos brand for a short time. Quazer said it wanted to become an alternative to conventional television and offered editorially selected documentaries from the Vimeo and YouTube platforms as well as licensed content from ZDF within selectable thematic channels. The last channel offer, which lasted only 21 channels, was made available via the website of the same name as well as native apps for the Android and iOS platforms, but only reached 430,000 users in test operation and was never able to build up a significant range; This was also due to the operating concept criticized by users and the special-interest channels, some of which were not offered in German.

At the end of July 2017, one of the managing directors, Sören Ziems, left the company and on August 9, 2017, Magic Internet GmbH was renamed Pluto TV Europe GmbH with Olivier Jollet as the managing director authorized to represent (extract from the commercial register 111549 B of August 18, 2017, Berlin district court- Charlottenburg).

On October 12, 2016, ProSiebenSat.1 officially announced that it had acquired a stake in the US Internet television portal Pluto TV and, as part of this stake, it was transferring Magic Internet and its Quazer brand to Pluto Inc., which is behind Pluto TV has come.

The distribution of Quazer was stopped in autumn 2017 due to a lack of reach and the new focus on Pluto TV participation.

At the beginning of 2019, Viacom took over Pluto TV , which wants to establish the brand as an advertising-financed offer on portals of partly paid streaming providers in Europe and, like Quazer, offers a few curated special-interest channels with in-house productions of the Viacom brands as well as licensed content - partly again in English.

MyVideo until May 2016

The advertising-financed offer of the MyVideo video portal originally comprised user-provided video clips and community functions that were based on the YouTube platform (until October 2015), followed later by music videos, feature films, short excerpts and trailers from TV formats from ProSiebenSat1 and web series (Webisodes ); User-generated content and interaction options for users have been discontinued, which has led to a significant decrease in user numbers and visits.

Other focal points were so-called theme worlds, anime series, Let's Play formats and live streams. Until MyVideo was discontinued as a video portal, the content could be accessed using a web browser and mobile apps for smartphones , tablet computers and smart TVs .

advertising

MyVideo was largely financed through advertising in the form of banners, pop-ups and video commercials. The video advertising, referred to as VideoAd by MyVideo itself , was displayed before and partly while watching videos. The commercials could not be fast forwarded or skipped and, like the banner ads and the pop-up windows, could only be filtered out with ad blockers .

copyright

In the terms and conditions, MyVideo pointed out that the content posted must not violate applicable laws (in particular patents, trademarks and copyrights). In accordance with the legal requirements, the right was reserved to remove the relevant content immediately using the notice-and-take-down procedure .

In addition, MyVideo used a software-based solution ( video fingerprint ) that saved the distinctive properties of a video when it was uploaded. If an objectionable video was removed as part of the notice-and-take-down procedure, this post was blocked for the platform in future and could not be posted again. If users found that the content of other users violated the terms and conditions or legal provisions, they could report this using an abuse report form.

After the change in the business model in October 2015, the offer consisted exclusively of content provided by the provider, which eliminated the copyright problem caused by uploaded videos.

broadcasts

Let's play together

On May 18, 2012, the first live stream called Let's Play Together took place on MyVideo with the two Let's Players Gronkh and Sarazar . It has since aired (intermittently) on Fridays at 6 p.m. The hundredth edition took place on November 28, 2014 and was also the last edition with Gronkh and Sarazar. The winter break should be used to prepare a "new" Let's Play Together .

On March 13, 2015, it was announced that the new edition, which has been broadcast since March 20, will be moderated by YouTubers Fabian Siegismund and David Hain instead of Gronkh and Sarazar. Since episode 103 the live stream has been on Thursdays and since episode 131 the episodes have also been streamed on Twitch . Since episode 122 there has been support for the two from the Youtubers LeFloid and Frodoapparat , which means that there were different constellations of moderation in the following programs. In episode 132 it was announced that there would be no more episodes.

Last man standing

The Webstars area was expanded to include MyVideo.de, as it achieved good audience figures. On March 1, 2013, a larger event called Last Man Standing and on November 30, 2013 the sequel "Last Man Standing 2" took place. The YouTubers Gronkh and Sarazar competed as Team LPT against Team PietSmiet . Both events started at 6 p.m. and were also broadcast on MyVideo for eight hours. The two teams challenged each other in various video games. From 11 p.m. onwards, games that were approved for ages 18 and over were also played. On August 8, 2015, the third edition took place under the title Last Man Standing Generations . In this edition, which took place at Gamescom in front of around 3,000 viewers and was moderated by YouTubers David Hain and Fabian Siegismund , Team PietSmiet and Team LPT did not meet each other as in the previous editions , but rather the so-called Teams Team Veterans and Team Rookies played against each other .

Let's play poker

On March 21, 2013 it was announced that another live stream was planned under the name Let's Play Poker . The live stream, which was first produced on March 23, 2013, was sponsored by the online poker room PokerStars . Usually eight well-known YouTubers play poker against each other. The winner donated his winnings to a non-profit organization. In addition, there was the possibility for a spectator to take part in the event as a so-called wildcard participant. All episodes were also uploaded to the official YouTube channel. From the tenth edition, the show was broadcast live on YouTube, and in the eleventh edition even in front of an audience. A total of thirteen issues were broadcast (as of April 17, 2016). All programs were made available on MyVideo after the live stream.

Boot camp

On April 2, 2014, an announcement for the Studio71 Bootcamp was published on the main channel . This was a project to which you could apply with your YouTube channel, provided you have less than 50,000 subscribers, and get support and help from the network with the production and distribution of your own videos and the design of the channel. At the same time you became a partner in the network. The participants were introduced, also on the main channel of Studio71, by the two YouTubers Fabian Siegismund and Dan the man, whereby they explained in a satirical way what the candidate could improve on his videos.

The announcement video for Bootcamp 2.0 was released on March 31, 2015, almost a year after the first one. This time anyone with a YouTube channel with fewer than 1,000 subscribers could take part. The youth magazine Bravo served as the official media partner.
