Mychajlo Iwanowytsch Pawlyk ( Ukrainian Михайло Іванович Павлик ; born September 17, 1853 ; in Monastyrske , Galicia , Austrian Empire ; † January 26, 1915 in Lviv , Galicia, Russian Empire ) was a Ukrainian journalist, writer and translator social activist.

Life

Mychajlo Pawlyk was born in the village of Monastyrske, which is now a district of the city of Kosiv in the Ukrainian Oblast of Ivano-Frankivsk , into a poor family of farmers and weavers. In 1874 he began studying at the Faculty of Philosophy at Lviv University . During his studies he took part in the social, societal and cultural life of Lviv and in the activities of Ukrainophile groups. He maintained close contacts with Ivan Franko , with whom he published the scientific and literary magazine " Громадський друг " (German "Society Friend "), the organ of the democratic youth of western Ukraine, in 1878 .

He was arrested for the first time in 1877 because of his correspondence with Mychajlo Drahomanow and the term "socialist" contained therein. In order to avoid another prison sentence, he stayed in Geneva and Montpellier between 1879 and 1882 and during this time helped Drahomanow and Serhij Podolynskyj with the preparation of the journal "Hromada".

In 1890 Pawlyk was one of the founders and for a time party chairman of the Ruthenian-Ukrainian Radical Party. He was also the editor of the newspapers Народ (German "people"), Хлібороб (German "farmers") and Громадський голос (German "public voice"). In 1900 he became a member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society and between 1897 and 1905 its first librarian. In 1915, Mychajlo Pawlyk died at the age of 61 in Lviv and was buried there in the Lychakiv Cemetery.
