Mychal George Thompson (born January 30, 1955 in Nassau , Bahamas ) is a retired Bahamian basketball player who was active from 1978 to 1991 in the North American professional league NBA .

NBA career

Thompson was selected first in the 1978 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers . He was the first foreign player who was ever elected to the first position.

Thompson played for the Blazers for eight years, averaging 16.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks. In 1986 he was transferred to the San Antonio Spurs and a year later from the Spurs to the Los Angeles Lakers . At the Lakers he came only as a replacement for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar from the bank, but won the NBA championship in 1987 and 1988 on the side of Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy and Magic Johnson .

In 1991 he resigned from the NBA and played for JuveCaserta Basket in Italy for a year . In his 13-year NBA career, Thompson averaged 13.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks.

Since his retirement, Thompson has worked as the radio commentator for the Lakers Games.

Personal

Thompson is the father of basketball player Klay Thompson , who currently plays for the Golden State Warriors . His older son, Mychel, played for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2011-12 season . His youngest son Trayce was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 2009 MLB Draft .
