In 2008, he founded the non-profit organization Tarsier.org, which promotes the conservation of biodiversity through scientific studies on tarsier. His projects include scientific field work , applied nature conservation , education and public relations as well as the production of nature films . His research programs deal with reducing biodiversity loss and global climate change through various methods such as phylogeography , phylogenetics , taxonomy , biogeography , bioacoustic indicators for species, conservation policy , conservation breeding and integrated pest management. Shekelle is a member of the IUCN / SSC Primate Specialist Group, which defines the endangered status of primates on the Red List of Threatened Species .
Since March 2013 he has been a research fellow in the anthropology department at Western Washington University in Bellingham .
