Mystery (also spelled MYSTERY ) is a Canadian art rock / progressive rock band that was founded in 1986 by multi-instrumentalist Michel St-Père.

history

Formation and the first three albums (1986–1999)

Mystery was founded in 1986 by Michel St-Père, who at that time was working as a sound engineer at “Studio Illusion”. Originally the band was called "Century" but was renamed Mystery after it was found out that a French band with the same name already existed.

After several changes in the line-up, a stable formation was found in 1990 with Michel St-Père (guitar), Stéphane Perreault (drums), Raymond Savoie (vocals) and Benoît Dupuis on keyboards. Richard Addison joined the band in 1991 as bassist, and Gary Savoie - Raymond Savoie's brother - became the front man . In 1992 the EP of the same name was released. Shortly thereafter, Stéphane Perreault fell seriously ill and had to take a break until autumn 1993.

In 1994, recordings began for the band's first album, Theater of the Mind . After the recordings, Addison left the band and was replaced by Patrick Bourque, who had already played on the piece Rythmizomena on the debut album. Michel Painchaud joined the band as a further member and played the saxophone and acoustic guitar .

In 1995 the band was reduced to four members because Dupuis and Painchaud had left the band. To increase the promotion of the first album, Michel St-Père founded his own music label , Unicorn Digital , on which all Mystery recordings will be published from this point on. With the release of the album Theater of the Mind , the band's popularity quickly grew beyond Canada.

While recording the second album Destiny? Perreault left the band and was replaced by Steve Gagné on the advice of sound engineer Gilles Peltier. In May 1998 the album Destiny? published and licensed by the French music label Musea . Shortly after the release, Anne Charbonneau joined the band as a keyboardist.

In 1999 the recordings for the next album started, but Gary Savoie left the band due to musical differences.

Benoît David era (1999-2014)

After Gary Savoie left the band, he was replaced by Benoît David , whom St-Père previously met at a Yes tribute concert by the band Gaïa (later Close To The Edge ). Michel St-Père's focus was now on his music label, which delayed work on the new Mystery album.

In 2000, Mystery released two pieces of music: a cover version of the song Hey You for a Pink Floyd tribute album and a demo recording of the song Beneath the Veil of Winter's Face for a progressive rock compilation , which was to be the title song of the same name on the next album. The band also released the compilation album At the Dawn of a New Millennium , which marked a change in the band's style.

During the next few years work on the new album continued and a preliminary version of the song As I Am was released on the compilation album Prog-résiste .

In 2006, Mystery released a cover version of Visions of Paradise on the Moody Blues tribute album Higher And Higher: A Tribute To The Moody Blues .

2007 released Mystery on May 15th the third studio album Beneath the Veil of Winter's Face . In September of the same year, Patrick Bourque, who was also a member of the band Emerson Drive , died. Suicide was given as the cause of death . François Fournier was accepted into the band as the new bass player, who brought Dean Baldwin with him as the second guitarist. In addition, the former keyboardist Benoît Dupuis came back to the band.

In 2008, Benoît David became the new lead singer for Yes (until 2012), replacing Jon Anderson . He remained a member of Mystery. This helped the band further increase their notoriety, but they had to adjust their own activities to Yes's schedule.

In 2009 the second mystery album Destiny? Released in a newly mixed version and with a new record cover as well as a bonus piece of music as a 10-year anniversary edition. The band also played as the opening act of The Musical Box on 3 April of 2009.

In 2010 the fourth album One Among the Living was released, which turned out to be the band's best-selling album to date. Many guest musicians were involved in this album, such as B. Oliver Wakeman and John Jowitt .

In 2011 Gagné left the band because he was unable to accompany the recordings of the next album, but he stayed with the band as a tour member. Nick D'Virgilio therefore contributed the recordings for the new album . In addition, Antoine Fafard (Spaced Out) played all the bass lines.

On July 28, 2012, Sylvain Moineau was announced by the band as the new guitarist and replacement for Baldwin. On August 10, 2012, the band released their fifth studio album, The World Is a Game .

In early 2013 it was announced that Jean-Sébastien Goyette would play drums in live performances, replacing Gagné. The first appearance with the new drummer was on February 7, 2013. A remixed version of At the Dawn of a New Millennium was released on February 26, 2013, as well as a new compilation album with works by the band from 2007 to 2012. On May 10, 2013, Mystery played live for the first time in Europe in the Netherlands during their The World Is a Game tour. This gig was released as the double live album Tales from the Netherlands on October 1, 2014.

The band (St-Père, Dupuis, Fournier, Moineau and Goyette) recorded the Gene Simmons song See You Tonite with singer Todd Farhood , which was released on the Kiss tribute album A World with Heroes .

Jean Pageau era (since 2014)

On March 14, 2014 it was announced that Benoît David had left the band in autumn 2013 because he wanted a break before the The World Is a Game tour. Jean Pageau, who opened Mystery in 2013 as the opening act for Saga , was announced as the new singer on March 9, 2014.

On July 7, 2014, Antoine Michaud was announced to replace Sylvain Moineau for all live concerts in 2014.

On November 1, 2014, the band released the album Delusion Rain . From late September to early November, the band toured Canada and Europe.

On April 3, 2016, the band played at the Progdreams V Festival in the Netherlands, which was released as DVD Second Home on August 7, 2017 and as CD on August 15, 2017. Dupuis left Mystery after this concert.

On September 2nd, 2016 the band played at the 2Days Prog + 1 Festival in Veruno , Italy . On September 5th of the same year Michaud was announced as the new keyboardist and replacement for Dupuis.

In August and September 2017, Mystery toured Europe and Canada and played all the songs on this album for the 10th anniversary of their album Beneath the Veil of Winter's Face .

On September 7th 2017 it was announced that Mystery will play at the Night of the Prog Festival in Sankt Goarshausen 2018. On the day of their performance on the Loreley, July 14, 2018, the band released their seventh studio album Lies and Butterflies.

During the "Live and Butterflies" tour that followed the album release, the band gave several concerts in Europe and Canada between March and November 2019. As part of the tour, the live album "Live in Poznan" was created, which was recorded on April 7, 2019 in the "Blue Note Jazz Club" in Poznan , Poland during the "Live and Butterflies" tour.
