The Mzimvubu ( isiXhosa ; German as: "place of hippos "; also Umzimvubu ; English: Mzimvubu River or Umzimvubu River ) is a river in the South African province of Eastern Cape (Eastern Cape). It rises on the border with Lesotho and flows into the Indian Ocean in an estuary .

course

The Mzimvubu rises near Qacha's Nek and Matatiele in the Drakensberg . From there it flows in numerous turns southwards, further south-eastwards towards the coast. Smaller ships can only navigate the river for the last ten kilometers. A port at the estuary at Port St. Johns was abandoned in 1944 due to increasing siltation.

The Mzimvubu divides the Pondoland region into an eastern and a western part. One of the tributaries is the Tsitsa, which, like its tributary Tina, is similar in length to the Mzimvubu until its confluence.

use

The river belongs to the Mzimvubu to Keiskamma Water Management Area. It is the largest unregulated river in South Africa; a use for the construction of irrigation systems or hydropower plants is being planned; In 2014, President Jacob Zuma started the Mzimvubu water project , which includes the construction of two dams and is expected to cost 12.45 billion rand . The catchment area is one of the rainiest regions in South Africa.
