N'guigmi [ nɡiɡmi ] is a department in the region of Diffa in Niger .

The department is located in the south-east of the country and borders on Chad . It consists of the urban parish of N'Guigmi and the rural parish of Kabléwa . The eponymous capital of the department is N'Guigmi.

history

After Niger gained independence in 1960, the national territory was divided into 32 districts ( circonscriptions ). One of them was the N'Guigmi district. 1964 an administrative reform divided Niger into seven departments, the predecessors of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements, the predecessors of the later departments. In the course of this, the N'Guigmi district was converted into the N'Guigmi arrondissement, with the Komadougou canton, until then part of the N'Guigmi district, added to the new Diffa arrondissement . Plans from the 1960s to separate N'Gourti as a separate arrondissement from N'Guigmi were not implemented at the time.

In 1998 the previous Arrondissements of Nigers were converted into departments, each headed by a prefect appointed by the Council of Ministers. The department has been divided into municipalities since 2002. Before that, it consisted of the urban center N'Guigmi, the canton N'Guigmi and a residual zone. In 2011, N'Gourti was separated from the N'Guigmi department as a separate department.

According to the 2012 census, the N'Guigmi department has 73,374 inhabitants. In the 2001 census, before the separation of N'Gourti, the population was 55,047, the 1988 census was 28,193 and the 1977 census was 32,277. The department of N'Guigmi is a main settlement area of ​​the Tubu in Niger. Members of the Daza live in N'Guigmi , next to the Téda one of two subgroups of the Tubu.
