The NATUM e. V. (naturopathy, acupuncture, complementary medicine and environmental medicine in gynecology) is a working group of the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGGG) founded in 1993 by Ingrid Gerhard and an independent association. Its members are mainly holistic and naturopathic doctors and scientists.

Tasks and goals of NATUM

NATUM pursues the goal of promoting the research, application and teaching of naturopathic methods , acupuncture , complementary medicine and environmental medicine in gynecology and obstetrics and integrating these into modern holistic medicine.

Another concern is to train doctors in complementary medicine. To this end, it offers courses that build on one another, special symposia and information events, some of which can be concluded with a certificate.

NATUM works with German universities to develop evidence-based research, teaching and guidelines in the field of complementary medicine and other naturopathic treatments. She was involved in the development of the AWMF guidelines for Dammriss III. and IV. degree after vaginal birth, management and hormone therapy (HT) in the peri- and post- menopause and in 2000 developed training guidelines for acupuncture in gynecology and obstetrics.

To support the goals of NATUM, NATUM has been awarding the € 3,000 prize for outstanding research in the field of complementary medicine and naturopathic treatment since 2013.

Current

Current board members are Bernd Ost (chairman), Reinhild Georgieff (secretary), Harald Meden (assessor) and Justus Peters (assessor).

The association has around 500 members and operates nationwide. Its members are mainly gynecologists, but also other doctors and scientists. NATUM publishes current articles and news from NATUM in every issue of the magazine "Gynäkologie + Obstshilfe". In addition, a section on complementary medicine appears regularly in the specialist journal “Frauenarzt”.

Together with the professional association of gynecologists (bvf), the non-profit association has set up a working group for complementary medicine in gynecology, which aims to promote advanced training for gynecologists. Christian Albring, President of the Federal Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said in a greeting on the occasion of its 20th anniversary in 2013 that NATUM is "the only scientific gynecological society in its field today".
