history

NETZ Bangladesh was founded in Bonn in 1989 and originally emerged from NETZ magazine, which was launched in 1979. NETZ has had full-time employees since 1991.

Focus of work

Project work in Bangladesh and India

The project work in Bangladesh focuses on marginalized population groups: people in extreme poverty, religious minorities and indigenous groups, people with disabilities, single and widowed women. The focus of work lies in the three areas of food security, primary education and human rights. The self-help projects are developed and implemented in cooperation with the local population through partner organizations in Bangladesh. The field of climate protection is an integral part of these projects. NETZ provides humanitarian aid in the event of natural disasters .

Food security

In the program "A lifetime of rice", NETZ and the partner organizations work to overcome hunger , malnutrition and to build a sustainable, future-proof existence. Another goal of the program is the social participation of individuals. All completed projects are based on five structural pillars:

  • Non-repayable start-up capital for your own small business (e.g. farm animals, seeds).
  • Training of women (agriculture and livestock, starting small businesses, women's and civil rights, health care).
  • advisory support in the first few years.
  • Establishment of self-help structures on a local and global level.
  • Independent representation of interests to enforce legal claims and the use of state services.

On the “End Extreme Poverty” platform, NETZ bundles a freely accessible collection of material and knowledge database for science and development policy practice with evaluations and studies on the subject of food security .

basic education

NETZ promotes access to inclusive basic education for children primarily in remote regions of rural Bangladesh that are inadequately provided with state primary schools. The focus of the program is a high-quality school education for children of all population groups, which is imparted through child-friendly teaching and learning methods. The NETZ basic education program comprises four types of schools:

  • Anandalok schools (long-term, non-state schools sponsored by the village community).
  • Village schools (non-state schools for short-term coverage of basic education needs in regions that are difficult to access).
  • State primary schools (promotion of teachers through further training and the involvement of educational social workers to improve the quality of teaching).
  • Preschools (for the targeted promotion of early childhood development).

Human rights defense

In its human rights program, NETZ, together with human rights organizations, supports activists in fighting all forms of discrimination , early marriage and violence . Human rights groups are empowered to conduct training, analysis, public action, and non-violent conflict transformation.

Disaster relief

As one of the worst flood-prone countries, the annual monsoons in Bangladesh regularly lead to catastrophic situations. In such cases, NETZ provides disaster relief together with local partner organizations and supports the emergency supply of food and reconstruction in the villages.

Activities in Germany

Educational work

NETZ's educational work promotes cultural exchange between Bangladesh and Germany. This is done through exchange visits, promoting cultural sensitivity and joint public events. These events are based on the educational concept of global learning and deal with global justice and the living conditions in Bangladesh. They take place in schools, communities or associations. This is intended to awaken a differentiated understanding of development cooperation among the participants.

NETZ has been sending volunteers to Bangladesh since 1991 and has been the sending organization of the development volunteer service weltwärts of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since 2008 . At the moment, the security situation does not allow posting, so the voluntary service has been paused for an indefinite period.

public relation

The focus of public relations is on reporting on current socio-political developments in Bangladesh and on supporting educational events organized by the Germany-wide network of volunteers. In addition, the Bangladesh magazine appears with a focus on society , culture and politics in Bangladesh.

Campaigning and lobbying

NETZ engages in political dialogue through the central political interest group "Bangladesh Forum", which NETZ also manages. The Bangladesh Forum sees itself as an association of aid and human rights organizations (including Amnesty International Germany , Bread for the World , Misereor ), Bangladeshis in Germany and scientists who work on Bangladesh. With the aim of a stronger positioning of Bangladesh in the public perception and in political decisions, the Bangladesh Forum supports political decision-makers with specialist and regional expertise. The work revolves around the question of the sustainable strengthening of the Bangladeshi civil society in the areas of poverty reduction and food security as well as human rights.
