AKB48 performing in Los Angeles (2010)

AKB48 (pronunciation in English [ eɪ keɪ biː fɔːtiː eɪt ]) is a Japanese idol group cast by Yasushi Akimoto .

The underlying concept is a musical group of idols that their fans can encounter on a daily basis. The group is therefore divided into four different teams that appear almost every day in their own theater in Tokyo 's Akihabara district . The name of the band is an abbreviation for Akihabara and the original target number of 48 singers. With over 20 million records sold and 23 first placements in a row in the Japanese Oricon single charts, AKB48 is one of the most successful Japanese music groups ever.

history

The band members were cast in July 2005 by Yasushi Akimoto from 7,924 applicants, with 24 girls ultimately being selected for AKB48. On December 8, 2005, the group made their debut with just 20 girls. This group later formed Team A. In cooperation with the Japanese telephone company NTT DoCoMo, a new round of applicants was called. A further 11,892 applied via MMS, 19 of which were selected for the Idol group. Of them, 18 girls finally formed Team K. In April 2007, Team B made its debut with another 16 members, completing the originally planned formation.

AKB48 at the Japan Expo in Paris, 2009

In December 2010 AKB48 received an entry in the Guinness Book of Records as the "largest [ie the largest number of members] pop group" in the world.

Based on this concept, Akimoto founded other bands such as SKE48 in Sakae, Nagoya , NMB48 in Namba, Osaka , HKT48 in Hakata, Fukuoka , NGT48 in Niigata , STU48 in Setouchi , JKT48 in Jakarta , MNL48 in Manila , Team TP in Taipei, Taiwan , team SH in Shanghai, China , BNK48 in Bangkok and MUM48 in Mumbai and until its dissolution in March 2012 also SDN48 that Saturday night ( S ature d ay n ight) in the AKB48 Theater occurred. The Chinese sister group SNH48, which was founded in Shanghai in 2012 , officially ended the partnership with AKB48 in 2016 and independently founded four further groups in China. In 2018 there was a cooperation between Akimoto and the Korean casting show Produce 101, which allowed members of the 48 groups to participate in the third season. Produce 48 ended when Hitomi Honda (AKB48 / Team 8), as well as Sakura Miyawaki and Nako Yabuki (both HKT48) founded the IZ * ONE group with 9 Korean trainees .

On May 25, 2014, Rina Kawaei, Anna Iriyama and a male team member were attacked by a 24-year-old with a saw and injured in their hands and face. The two singers were operated on successfully, a concert planned for the evening was canceled.

Concept, marketing and success

The concept devised by Akimoto provides for a special closeness between the band and their fans. This is achieved through the almost daily appearances in their own theater and through regular "handshake" events in which fans can interact with the band members for a short time. Almost all girls have their own blogs and accounts on social platforms such as Google+ and Twitter . The band's target group includes members of the Japanese otaku scene, but AKB48 has also been known to the general public for several years. Japanese media also speak of a social phenomenon. The marketing strategy includes an extensive selection of merchandise items and the constant media presence, especially of the more prominent members, who appear in a large number of TV and radio shows, dorama series, advertising campaigns, movies, musicals and trade fairs. In addition, AKB48 produces various of its own TV formats. In addition, from April 29, 2012 to April 30, 2013 the SF music anime series AKB0048 by Shōji Kawamori , in which the protagonists are based on members of the band.

Senbatsu

Not all group members participate equally in the group's publications. Singles are usually sung and presented by a selection made by management (Japanese Senbatsu ). Minami Takahashi is the only member to have participated in all of the A-Side singles since the group's debut, with the exception of Janken Taikai. Kojima Haruna holds the record with the most A-side singles (40 out of 42). She voluntarily renounced participation for the election of the 41st single.

Once a year the fans have the opportunity to vote for the Senbatsu of a single through previously purchased vouchers (Senbatsu Sōsenkyo) . In 2012, the first 16 places eligible for participation in the Single Gingham Check ; it won it Yūko Ōshima with 108,837 votes before Mayu Watanabe (72,574 votes). A total of over 1.4 million votes were cast. The total of votes cast increased to 2.7 million in 2013. This time it won HKT48's Rino Sashihara (150,570 votes) ahead of Yūko Ōshima (136,503). These elections, in which members of all Japanese sister groups participate, are the subject of extensive coverage in the Japanese media landscape.

At Senbatsu Sōsenkyo 2014, Mayu Watanabe (159,854) won, making it the new center of AKB48. Last year's winner, Rino Sashihara (141,954), came in second. Third place went to Yuki Kashiwagi (104,364).

Previous winners

Janken tournament

Another special feature is the “ Scissors, Rock, Paper ” tournament that has been held annually since 2011 (Japanese: Janken ). The members compete against each other and thus determine the participation in another single among themselves. With the Janken tournament, lesser-known members are given the opportunity to participate in singles and their extensive promotion. In 2017 the members competed against each other in small groups they had formed.

Sub-groups and solo releases

In addition to the regular publications of the main group, secondary formations with different lifetimes are regularly formed, whose recordings also reach top positions in the charts. Some members are also marketed as solo artists. Meanwhile, the sister groups also have their own number 1 hits. In 2011 and 2012 the first 5 places in the Oricon annual charts were each occupied by AKB48 singles. The band has currently sold over 20 million records and holds the Japanese record for the best-selling singles by a girl group. In 2011, the band's total sales were over $ 200 million.

Current formation

AKB48 currently (as of December 10, 2018) consists of teams A, K, B and 4 with a total of 115 members. Team 8 has been around since April 2014. It is sponsored by Toyota and the concept is "Idols who meet you". They have their own show in the theater and also appear regularly on the singles' B-sides. However, they are not seen as an official sister group. Team 8 currently consists of 47 members from different prefectures in Japan.
During a reorganization on August 24, 2012, the first team 4 was dissolved, and its 10 members were distributed to the three other teams. At the end of August 2013 a new team 4 was formed. In addition, there is the Kaigai Iseki ( 海外 移 籍 (組) , ~ (Gumi) , "(group) international transfer") with 4 members who are temporarily assigned to international sister groups for advertising purposes. Two of these members hold dual positions in regular AKB48 and SKE48 teams. In addition to the four team leaders, there is also a "general director" ( 総 監督 , sōkantoku ), to whom all four AKB48 teams and all sister
groups report . The current general manager is Yui Yokoyama .

There is also the Kenkyūsei team ( チ ー ム 研究生 , dt. "Team trainees"), in which potential future members gain experience, for example as a replacement for regular members and, since 2008, in their own shows in the band's own theater. New Kenkyūsei are selected in regular auditions , the last time in December 2016, the 16th casting for the band. In one case, a member (Minami Minegishi) was reassigned to the Kenkyūsei team for misconduct . There are currently 18 members on hold. 43 members, most of them from Team 8, are currently assigned to two different groups.
