NSW-Anime (spelling: NSW-AnImE) is a German web radio with a focus on Asian pop culture and music as well as anime and manga . The team is made up of teenagers and young adults. The abbreviation NSW stands for N oten S cheune W eddendorf .

History of the station

Start time

The station was founded on January 4th, 2008 under the name “nsw-radio” by Andreas “Andy” Müller and Jennifer “Tsubomi” Leitz, initially as a mainstream web radio. It should be a "project by fans for fans" without any commercial intentions beyond its own cost recovery.

As part of the weekly program, there was also a program on Sundays called “NSW-AnImE”, produced and hosted by Tsubomi, who is enthusiastic about Japan and anime. From January 15, 2008, this broadcast had an independent Internet presence for its listeners (in addition to the nsw-radio site).

The first “team” came together in April 2008 when Pawel “raggyman” Franzkowiak joined them as an experienced web radio moderator and technician. In July 2008, Lisa "Rikku" Stegen joined as the presenter and Elena "LadyMarmalade" Abraham was the first pure editor. Franzi “Jae” Werthmann rounded off the “NSW Ur-Team” in September 2008 as a presenter for everything to do with K , C and J pop .

After it became clear that one could not gain a foothold among the countless mainstream web radios, but that the anime section and the listeners' interest in music and information about Asia continued to grow, the team decided at the beginning of 2009 to completely abandon " nsw-radio ". The name of the original program about anime and Japan, NSW-AnImE, has now become the name of the entire project and the associated website replaced that of nsw-radio.

NSW anime today

At the restart of the radio project under the name NSW-AnImE on January 16, 2009, the station specialized in Japanese and Asian music in the context of anime. Musical excursions into the areas of cartoon, musical , film and video game music (from 2009), pop and rock music from China, Korea and Japan (from 2010), My Little Pony and medieval rock (from 2012) as well as a broadcast about the Contents of the video portal Youtube (from 2014) followed.

Due to the success of anime and the title songs translated from Japanese by Arts of Toyco under Andy Knote , Noel Pix, Ruth Kirchner and others on German television, the program "NSW-AnImE DEUTSCH!" Was created in 2009, which only focuses on German anime Songs limited. Japanese anime songs were featured in the programs “Anime no Sekai!” Or “Little Latenight”. “Jae-Pop” (from 2013 “KB4U”, Korean Beats For You) brought the interested listener closer to mainstream pop from Korea and the “Chinese Charts” were complemented by a music program from China. In addition, themed programs such as “Bouken no Cosplay” (from 2011) about cosplay or “Cartoon Pur” (from 2009), which dealt with music from Disney films or cartoons from the western world, were gradually added.

The NSW team currently consists of around 34 people in the areas of moderation, editing, event and community organization as well as technology and graphics.

mascot

Mérodii

To find the name for Mérodii, after the drawing competition, a name competition was held on Animexx with a competition. Over 100 name suggestions were submitted by over 30 participants. The then still small NSW team consulted and then came to the decision that “the girl” should be called Mérodii. The name Mérodii is derived from the English word Melody (melody) and its spelling is based on the Japanese メ ロ デ ィ ー (merodī).

Oto

On the picture sent in by the illustrator Sandra “Joichiru” Ende, in addition to a girl drawn in a manga style, a yellow note with a face was visible. This is how the co-mascot of NSW Anime was born. Oto or also called Oto-chan, is a small flying note and the constant companion of Mérodii. In its current form, Oto has clearly indicated arms and legs, but can (as is usual with sounds) float and fly - but only over a certain distance.

Tsubomi decided then that the flying note should be called Oto. The word oto is Japanese (音) and means note or tone.

The first Oto plush toys were created by hand in 2009 - since the end of 2013 there has been a very detailed, hand-crocheted version by Oto based on the draftsman "DKelli".

program

NSW-Anime broadcasts an automated music program ( playlist ) all year round . In prime time from 6 p.m. to midnight, there are between two and three moderated programs on the schedule. On special occasions such as January 4th (founding day), Easter, April 1st, Halloween, Christmas, New Year's Eve / New Year's, there is often a broader broadcast program up to multi-day broadcast marathons.

Especially at Easter, Halloween and Christmas there are almost every year episodic radio plays that are recorded by the team members and produced by nsw-media. These include up to 24 episodes with a total playing time of eight hours per radio play and can also be purchased as a download.

Spelling NSW-AnImE

The abbreviation NSW originated from the summary of the first letters of the NotenScheune Weddendorf , where nsw-radio also began. For the spelling AnImE with alternating uppercase and lowercase letters, the project manager of NSW-Anime, Andreas Müller, took his inspiration from the PlayStation 2 game Skate Attack , for which he developed the sound design. The mails in the game only separate sentences with capital letters instead of punctuation marks.

Community

NSW-Anime operates its own social network called NSW-Family, which offered user profiles, its own galleries and private messages. In addition, NSW Anime is represented at many conventions , including the Connichi in Kassel, the Japan Day in Düsseldorf, the Leipzig Book Fair and in particular the Anime Marathon .
Between the NSW anime and the anime no Tomodachi e. V. , which publishes FUNime magazine and organizes the Anime Marathon every year, there is an intensive collaboration. This is expressed in the strong cooperation in the Anime Marathon.
