In April 2014, eight units of the new series were commissioned by the Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kaisha and two more units were included as options in the construction contract. Both construction options were converted into firm orders in July 2014. Construction began in spring 2015 at the Japan Marine United shipyard in Kure. The first delivered ship of the ten units to be built by 2018, all of which are named from the shipping company abbreviation and a species of bird, was the NYK Blue Jay , which was put into service in 2016 . The ships are used on the Europe-Far East route.
The double hull ships belong to the group of ULCS container ships. They are the largest container ships ever delivered in Japan. As with the majority of the container ships of this size segment, the deckhouse is arranged far forward, which enables an improved line of sight and thus higher forward deck loading. A striking feature of the deck structure of the ships in terms of shipbuilding is their small expansion in the area of the upper decks in relation to the ship's width, which is intended to offer less wind resistance when sailing with little or no deck cargo. The cams of the bridge deck are completely closed. Among other things, the bunker tanks are arranged below the superstructure in order to meet the latest MARPOL regulations. The drive system with the two-stroke main diesel engine of the type W9X82, developed by Winterthur Gas & Diesel in Switzerland and manufactured in Japan by Diesel United under a Wärtsilä license, is arranged far aft. To improve maneuverability, transverse thrusters are arranged in the bow and stern. The holds of the ships are closed with pontoon hatch covers. The ships have a maximum container capacity of 14,026 TEU , with an average container weight of fourteen tons, the capacity is reduced. There are also connections for integral refrigerated containers .
