NYPC (formerly New Young Pony Club ) is a British band from London , founded in 2004 , that combines indie rock with danceable electro pop . The band consists of Tahita Bulmer (vocals) and Andy Spence (guitar).

Band history

After the founding of New Young Pony Club, two 7 ″ singles ( The Get Go and Ice Cream ) were released on the small London label Tirk Recordings in 2006. In the same year the band switched to the Australian indie label Modular Recordings , which also has successful bands such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Wolfmother under contract. The first album Fantastic Playroom made it to number 54 in the UK charts, the two singles The Bomb and Ice Cream to number 47 and 40 respectively. In 2010, the second album The Optimist was released .

The band's only extensive tour in 2006/2007 was presented by the New Musical Express as an "Indie Rave Tour" and undertaken together with Cansei de Ser Sexy , the Klaxons and The Sunshine Underground .

In 2013 the band announced that they would in future appear under the shortened name NYPC and only in a two-man cast. In October of that year, the third studio album was released, also called NYPC . Hard Knocks was released as a pre-release .

style

New Young Pony Club combines indie rock song structures with elements of classic New Waves and Electropop by artists such as New Order and Kraftwerk . The singer Tahita Bulmer explained the style of the band in an interview: "We marry the dance ethic with the pop ethic, and make something that you can dance to and sing along to."

The band can only partially be described with modern and fuzzy style terms such as “ electroclash ” or “ dance punk ”. The typical electroclash is more electronically and experimentally oriented, the dance-punk a movement of the US-American alternative music. The influential British music magazine New Musical Express began coining the term “ New Rave ” in 2006 and calls it New Young Pony Club, the Klaxons , Hadouken! and shit disco as the typical representatives of this new style. However, this neologism is not undisputed . On the one hand, the inflation of new style names is criticized, on the other hand, apart from the visual aesthetics , the New Rave has relatively little to do with typical rave music.
