Night of the Open Monument

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Night of the Open Monument or the Long Night of the Open Monument are individual events during which on a certain evening in a municipality or city, otherwise inaccessible cultural monuments are opened to the public and are open to viewing. Following the example of the Long Night of the Museums, there are often additional performances, readings or exhibitions in the monuments. The events take place close to the Open Monument Day, which always falls on the second Sunday in September, but differ from this both in the additional cultural program and in the fact that they are limited to a few locations.

Long night of the open monument in Stralsund

The Long Night of the Open Monument in Stralsund took place from 2002 to 2017 mostly on the 1st Saturday in September, but most recently on the evening before Open Monument Day. In the year of the first event, the old town of Stralsund was included in the UNESCO world cultural heritage together with the old town of Wismar . The Long Night of the Open Monument was organized by the Tourist Office of the Hanseatic City of Stralsund and was the first such series of events in Germany. A ribbon had to be purchased as a ticket to visit the monuments and the cultural events taking place there. After a steady decline in visitors, Monument Night was suspended in 2018 in order to review the concept. Instead, the new event this year was the Stralsund Museum Night , where various museums and cultural institutions in the city could be visited free of charge.

Night of the open monument in Baden-Württemberg

The Night of the Open Monument has also been taking place in Baden-Württemberg since 2011 . Unlike in Stralsund, the venue changes annually. The monument night is always on the eve of the day of the open monument instead. For the first time it was organized and carried out by the city of Riedlingen following suggestions from the state monument preservation department in the Tübingen regional council . The following venues were only in this administrative district until 2014. Since the night of the open monument in Tübingen 2014, the nationwide opening of the day of the open monument in the state has taken place. Today, the Baden-Württemberg State Monument Preservation and the event community act as organizers. According to the model of the day events, no entrance fees have to be paid.
