Emergence

The material for the album was almost finished when the EP Orkblut - The Retaliation was recorded. The music was written by PK and TT, the lyrics to The Dark Kiss were written by Absurd drummer Hendrik "JFN" Möbus, who was imprisoned for the murder of Sandro Beyer . Night anthems (From the Twilight Kingdom) were recorded and mixed on May 22, 23 and 27 and June 13, 1995 in the Hörnix recording studio. The band was supported by guest singer Elisabeth Toriser; her participation was an idea of TT, but PK stated that she would not sing for Abigor again.

Music genre

Nachtthymnen (From the Twilight Kingdom) continues the development from the raw sound of the debut album Verwüstung / Invoke the Dark Age to a faster and more melodic style, which is understandable on the EP Orkblut - The Retaliation . The mostly fast guitar playing consists of a high-pitched lead and a slightly lower-pitched rhythm guitar . The singing of guest musician Elisabeth Toriser is also used on this album; while Turov of Vönger Musikmagazin describes it as an "angelic female voice", according to Steve Hoeltzel of the Chronicles of Chaos , "its crystal tones" raise the neck hairs of the listener . The production is more professional and less chaotic, but always typical of the band and relatively raw. For the passages that are reminiscent of medieval and classical music , no samples were used, but compositions by the band themselves, as PK emphasizes. The band writes in the booklet that their music is a weapon and should afflict everyone who tries to find something beautiful in it, and that the dark spirit Euronymous is guarding the black paths.

Texts

The texts are written in English and partly in German, whereby the choice of language depends on mood as well as experimental; the texts written by PK were first written in German in his mind. As PK explained to Voices from the Darkside , the first songs on the album are about Norse mythology , inspired by books on Norse myths and the lost balance between good and bad forces that can be found in them . Since the texts on Dornen , As Astral Images Darken Reality and Revealed Secrets of the Whispering Moon were written by TT, PK could not comment on the intended messages.

Unleashed Ax-Age is about Ragnarök . With the statement "This vision should not be seen as a part of the upcoming Viking trend" the band distances itself from the emerging Viking Metal , so that the events related to Ragnarök like the release of Fenrir , the end of Midgard , the departure of Naglfar and Surtr are more purifying Weltenbrand for Abigor are "nothing but interesting thematic material" in a satanic context.

Scars in the Landscape of God is inspired by anti-Christian feelings and the war against God . One should open one's eyes, believe in oneself and the voice in oneself; only when the soul is freed from the limits set by the cross can the spirit show its strength and man feel harmony and fight the Christian pestilence.

Reborn Through the Gates of Three Moons is about the endless cycle of life and the fact that one cannot escape one's fate, as the speaking authority has tried.

Dornen is about the speaker's longing for a painless death, in order to vanish from a worthless life, “into the last and eternal darkness” .

As Astral Images Darken Reality is about an astral journey in which the speaker leaves the world behind in order to find peace in the ninth dimension.

The text for The Dark Kiss , written by JFN, is about vampirism and immortality.

I Face the Eternal Winter is a song about a creature of the eternal night, a demon with a mortal soul who travels lonely through frosty spheres. For this text, PK was inspired by a dream about frozen landscapes.

In Revealed Secrets of the Whispering Moon , he brings the seeds of evil to earth as speakers in the name of Satan .

A Frozen Soul in a Wintershadow is about PK's longing for the past, night and death, with the announcement that it will soon pass into the sleep of death and never return: According to PK, life is only worth living through death .

Reviews

Frank Stöver from Voices from the Darkside described night anthems (From the Twilight Kingdom) as almost comparable to Emperors In the Nightside Eclipse due to its bombastic, almost orchestral sounding passages . The good production goes well with the music and shows that Black Metal does not necessarily need a garage sound to convey the right atmosphere. Night anthems are definitely one of the strongest releases of the genre in a long time and are complemented by excellent design. Kai Wendel from Rock-Hard magazine attested the band a significant increase in quality; the keyboards sound “no longer cheap”, the sound is “really okay, and a few Gothic sprinkles provide the contrast to the bitter beatings. A recommendable disc, with which the trio can hold a candle to the boys from the far north ”. In 2009 the magazine added the album to its list of "250 Black Metal Albums To Know". Turov from Vönger Musikmagazin described the album as one of the best of the band; the guitar melody is unique and has not been matched in any of the following works, the drumming belongs “to the absolute upper class [...]. Partly ultra-fast, desolate and rough; then again calm and dignified or with many decorations such as z. B. Breaks . Very cool, really extremely cool is this brute wood in the blastbeat parts. That rocks like hell ".

Steve Hoeltzel from Chronicles of Chaos also compared the sound with that of In the Nightside Eclipse , although the production at Abigor is much clearer; however, the songs are often disappointing; of the estimated hundred different riffs , only a few are really engaging. Still, he definitely likes Revealed Secrets of the Whispering Moon and A Frozen Soul in a Wintershadow . The band could be recommended for fans of more musical bands like Emperor or Enslaved , but he recommends listening to Orkblut - The Retaliation first . John Chedsey of Satan Stole My Teddybear, on the other hand, describes Abigor as a black metal band that you either love or hate, and whose music he cannot get used to; The pitch scares him off while listening, but he can recognize the talent of the musicians. However, her style is unique and Nachtthymnen (From the Twilight Kingdom) is one of her most recommendable releases.

  5. "It reads" this vision should not be seen as a part of the upcoming Viking trend. " The song tells of the coming of Ragnarok - the release of Fenrir, the launching of Naglfar, the cleansing fires of Surt - but here Ragnarok is used as nothing but interesting thematic material. The remainder of the album is distinctly luciferian […]. In fact, the final words of the liner notes again mirror words by Vikernes quoted in the last chapter: “the music of Abigor is a weapon and shall haunt all those who try to discover something beautiful in it ... And the dark spirit of Euronymous still guards all black ways. ”“ Aaron Patrick Mulvany: "REAWAKENING PRIDE ONCE LOST": INDIGENEITY AND EUROPEAN FOLK METAL . Master thesis.
