The local recreation area Eibia in the Lüneburg Heath is a public recreational area owned by the city of Walsrode . The hilly landscape with rivers, heaths and burial mounds near the nature reserve Lönsgrab includes large parts of the site of the era of National Socialism based defense contractor and gunpowder -Produzenten Eibia GmbH for chemical products . A “history and remembrance trail” across the area allows visitors to explore the former factory site on their own.

history

On the site of the former gunpowder factory, thousands of forced laborers from more than 20 countries were used to produce armaments during the Second World War .

In the post-war period , by order of the British military authorities, the Eibia plants were dismantled and many of the hundreds of bunkers were blown up in 1949 as part of the demilitarization of West Germany . As a result, the ruins of the destroyed powder factory remained almost untouched in the fenced area for around three decades. During this period, a place of refuge for numerous animals and plants was able to develop in this part of the Lohheide, which is rarely used by humans .

In 1971, 1972 and 1980, the Bomlitz community acquired large parts of the site in order to develop a recreational area for the population. For this purpose, the areas were redeveloped in the 1980s by the Lower Saxony ordnance disposal service and various specialist companies until autumn 1989. In the same year, the Eibia was made accessible to the population as a recreation area.

The European Union and the association Stiftung Geschichtshaus Bomlitz e. V. later realized, among other things, an explanatory “history and memory path” across the site of the former gunpowder factory, where today “remains of concrete, unnatural earthen walls and strangely misplaced concrete walls” can be found everywhere.
