Nakoula Basseley Nakoula (born July 20, 1957 in Egypt ) is an Egyptian-American author, producer and director who became known internationally under the pseudonym Sam Bacile as the producer of the film Innocence of Muslims . According to his own statements, he is a member of the Coptic Church in Egypt.

Life

Nakoula immigrated to the United States and became a US citizen. According to the Associated Press , he was grappling with a series of financial troubles and was sentenced to multiple fines for financial crimes, including a $ 106,000 garnishment against him in 1997 and a $ 191,000 tax garnishment in 2006. Nakoula owned a gas station , on whose operation the California State Board of Equalization had already imposed attachments between 1989 and 1992 on account of tax and interest debts as well as fines. In 2010 he was sentenced to several months' imprisonment for bank fraud among other things . At that time, he was also banned from internet access for five years.

Nakoula lived in Cerritos , California near Los Angeles in the late summer of 2012 . Abanoub Basseley, his 21-year-old son, who paid the actors in the film Innocence of Muslims , also lived there.

Nakoula is of the Coptic Christian faith .

Criminal record

The Daily Beast reported that Nakoula was arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in 1997 after finding methamphetamine precursors (also known as crystal meth ) and over $ 40,000 in cash in small bills. He was charged with attempted drug production. He pleaded guilty and was given four years' imprisonment, the last three of which were suspended. He was serving his sentence in the Los Angeles County Jail. In 2000 he declared his bankruptcy. He was imprisoned for another year in 2002 for violating probation requirements.

In 2010, Nakoula did not appeal federal fines for financial fraud in California and was ordered to pay $ 794,701 in compensation. Nakoula opened bank accounts with false identities and social security numbers, including that of a six-year-old child, and placed checks on these accounts and withdrew money from ATMs. He received another 21-month sentence in federal prison. Nakoula had requested an Arabic interpreter during his criminal proceedings in court.

In a series of talks, Nakoula provided the federal authorities with details of the organization of the check fraud ring in exchange for a reduction in his term of office.

Nakoula was released from prison in a temporary facility in June 2011. He was ordered not to use computers or the Internet for a period of five years without permission from his probation officer. Nakoula was released from the transitional facility five weeks before filming Innocence of Muslims . On September 27, 2012, he was arrested for possible probation violations and because, according to US Federal Judge Suzanne Segal, he posed "a certain danger to the general public". On November 7, 2012, he was finally sentenced to one year imprisonment for violating four of his eight probation conditions.

Innocence of Muslims

After being dubbed into Arabic , the trailers for the film published on the Internet became the cause of serious riots against US embassies and other Western institutions in Islamic countries since September 11, 2012. The film Innocence of Muslims he produced was due to the excerpts which were uploaded to the video portal YouTube in several language versions , classified by numerous media as anti-Islamic in terms of content and as amateurish in terms of staging. Nakoula admitted on September 13, 2012 to have produced the film and said she had no regrets.

On September 18, the Egyptian Imam Ahmed Fuad Aschusch issued a fatwa on the film. He called for "all young Muslims in the US and in Europe to be called to kill the makers and actors of the film, as well as all who contributed to its dissemination, for denigrating the Prophet Muhammad". The radical Islamist fatwa was published in several jihadist forums on the Internet. The fatwa is not legally valid under Islamic law , as the previously unknown imam is not a mufti .

The Pakistani Minister for Railways Ghulam Ahmad Bilour began on September 22, 2012 for those who Nakoula kill, a bounty of 100,000 dollars from. A spokesman for Pakistan's Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and Bilour's party immediately distanced themselves from the appeal, but left the minister in the Pakistani cabinet despite calls for murder.

In November 2012, Nakoula and six other Christians were sentenced to death in absentia by an Egyptian court for involvement in the making of the film.
