Nancy Jo Powell (* 1947 in Cedar Falls , Iowa ) is an American diplomat .

Life

Nancy Jo Powell joined the Foreign Service in 1997 and was accredited in Islamabad , Kathmandu and Ottawa . She was employed at the US State Department in the Nepal and Migration departments . From 1990 to 1992 Powell was Deputy US Ambassador to Lomé and until 1993 Consul General in Calcutta . Subsequently, she was Embassy Counselor in New Delhi until 1995 and Deputy Ambassador in Dhaka until 1997 . Afterwards she was ambassador to Uganda from 1995 to 1997 .

From July 1999 to June 2001, Powell was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Africa. She then acted as Ambassador to Ghana from 2001 to 2002 and as Ambassador to Pakistan from 2002 to 2004 , before becoming Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Legal Department from November 2004 to March 2005. From March 14 to November 25, 2005, she was Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of International Drugs and Crime and, from 2006, Infectious Diseases Commissioner. From 2006 to 2007, Powell served as intelligence officer in South Asia and the United States; then she became the ambassador in Nepal. In 2009 she headed the human resources department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
