Nancy Van de Vate

Nancy Van de Vate (born December 30, 1930 in Plainfield, New Jersey ) is an American composer.

Life

Nancy Van de Vate received a degree in piano from the Eastman School of Music and a Bachelor of Arts degree in music theory from Wellesley College. She received her Masters in Music Composition from the University of Mississippi and a PhD in Music Composition from Florida State University . This was followed by further studies in electronic music at Dartmouth College and the University of New Hampshire .

De Vate was particularly known for her compositions for large orchestra . She has been a faculty member at eleven universities and colleges in the United States and also at the Jakarta Conservatory (Yayasan Pendidikan Music) in Indonesia. Today Nancy Van de Vate teaches music composition at the Institute for European Studies in Vienna .

The premiere of her opera , on the Western Front (All Quiet on the Western Front) took place in 2003 in Osnabrück instead. The work was included in their program in May 2003 by the New York City Opera . In January 2005 her new chamber opera, Where the Cross Is Made , based on a piece by Eugene O'Neill , was awarded a prize by the National Opera Association (USA) as part of their international, biennial competition for new chamber operas. An abridged version was presented in New York City. The entire opera was also in January 2006, at the 51st annual meeting of the National Opera Association in Ann Arbor ( Michigan , listed).

Chernobyl is one of her 26 orchestral works to date, which has been played in Vienna, Hamburg, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, the USA (Chautauqua Festival) and in Maine (Portland Symphony Orchestra). It was played as part of a special concert by the Portland Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Toshiyuki Shimada, on February 25, 2006, the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster . Chernobyl has been played by radio stations since it was released on CD in 1987.

Van de Vate composed solos and chamber works for various instruments and ensembles, including the String Quartet No. which was commissioned by the Vienna Mozart Year 2006 . 2 and the Brass Quintet No. 2: Variations on the "Streets of Laredo" , commissioned by the University of Mississippi for their 2005 music festival.

She participated as a speaker at the World Music Council meeting in Los Angeles in October 2005. Since receiving the Kyoto Prize for Music, she has also been a nominator here. With her late husband, Clyde Smith, she founded the CD company Vienna Modern Masters in 1990, of which she is president and artistic director.
