Napoleon McCallum Ardel (* 6. October 1963 in Milford , Ohio ) is a former American American football poker players in the position of running backs . The 1.88 meter tall McCallum played for the Los Angeles Raiders in the National Football League (NFL).

Despite being one of the few US Navy graduates to make the leap to the NFL, he's more known for having a terrible sports accident after retiring from his career.

Career

McCallum as a member of the US Navy

McCallum was committed to the United States Naval Academy after school . With the local sports team, the midshipmen , he established himself as one of the best running backs of his age, was nominated twice for the All American team of the best college players and gained 7,172 yards of space. In the 1986 NFL Draft , he was drafted 108th by the Los Angeles Raiders . As a soldier, he could only train part-time with the Raiders, as he had to be on duty during the week. Nevertheless, he achieved 639 yards of space in his rookie season . Due to his mandatory five-year Navy military service, it was not until 1990 that McCallum was honorably discharged and was able to continue his NFL career. But it was only used sporadically and remained in its statistically best season (1993) with a space gain of 134 yards.

End of career

On September 5, 1994 McCallum ran up against the San Francisco 49ers . Since it was the opening game of the 1994 NFL season , the game aired nationwide on Monday Night Football . There the TV audience witnessed how McCallum sustained one of the worst sports injuries in NFL history after a tackle by 49ers linebacker Ken Norton junior . When he fell, McCallum got his left cleat stuck in the grass, broke his knee with a complete hyperextension and stayed on Norton junior with a lower leg sticking out at an unnatural angle. He had to lie motionless for several minutes until the doctors were able to secure McCallum lying on top of him and transport it away. He suffered a completely dislocated knee, tore all of his knee ligaments and an artery and suffered irreparable nerve damage. The injury was so severe that it was threatened with amputation . McCallum had to endure six surgeries before his leg was working halfway again. He always hoped for a comeback, but when he lost "a race against a five-year-old girl" a year later, he ended his NFL career.

In 2003 McCallum was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame . The Navy annually awards the “Napoleon McCallum Award” for the best offensive midshipmen player .
