Narcisse Théophile Patouillard (born July 2, 1854 in Macornay , † March 30, 1926 in Paris ) was a French mycologist . Patouillard was one of the leading French mycologists of his time. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Pat. "

Life

Patouillard went to school in Lons-le-Saunier and became a telegraphist at the age of 15, where he was transferred near Paris to study botany at the Natural History Museum. He studied pharmacy in Besançon with a diploma in 1879. In the same year he married. He later continued his studies at the École Supérieure de Pharmacie in Paris with a diploma in 1884 with a dissertation on mushrooms (Des Hyménomycètes au point de vue de leur structure et de leur classification). From 1881 he was a pharmacist in Poligny (Jura) , 1884/85 in Fontenay-sous-Bois , 1886 to 1898 in Paris and then in Neuilly-sur-Seine . From 1893 to 1900 he was a taxidermist at the chair for cryptogams at the École Supérieure de Pharmacie in Paris. In 1900 he received his doctorate there (Essai taxonomique sur les familles et les genres des Hyménomycètes).

He was considered a leading expert on the taxonomy of mushrooms and first described many new species and genera, most of which are still valid today. Many types of mushrooms were also named after him (for example, a synonym Inocybe patouillardii of the brick-red crack fungus ). In particular, he was an expert on tropical mushrooms, for example from Brazil, Java, Mexico, the Caribbean, New Caledonia, the Philippines, Japan, India.

In the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris there are over 3000 watercolor drawings of mushrooms by him (bequeathed to the museum by his daughter in 1968). His herbarium was acquired by Harvard University in 1905.

In 1884 he was one of the founders of the Société mycologique de France and was its president in 1891/92.

In 1920 he became an honorary member of the British Mycological Society .
