Nazim Qalib oğlu Hüseynov (born August 2, 1969 in Baku ) is a former Soviet judoka who competed for Azerbaijan from 1993 . He competed in the super lightweight (up to 60 kg) and won an Olympic gold medal and two European championship titles in this weight class.

Athletic career

Starting for the Soviet Union, Hüseynov won two international junior tournaments in 1989 in Marseille and Kiev. In 1991 he won the World Cup in Budapest. At the 1991 World Championships in Barcelona , he won his first three fights and lost in the semifinals to the Japanese Tadanori Koshino . He won the battle for bronze against the Cuban Israel Hernández .

In 1992 there was no longer a Soviet team, but the United Team representing the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). At the European Championships in Paris Hüseynov won five fights, in the final he defeated the French Philippe Pradayrol . In Barcelona at the 1992 Olympics , he played and won six fights. In the semifinals he overcame the reigning world champion with Tadanori Koshino, in the final he beat the South Korean Yoon Hyun with a coca rating.

At the European Championships in Athens in 1993 Hüseynov competed for Azerbaijan. In the final he defeated Hüseyin Özkan , who was still starting for Russia and seven years later was to become the first Turkish judo Olympic champion. At the World Championships in Hamilton Hüseynov defeated Georgi Wasagaschwilli from Georgia in the semifinals and was defeated by the Japanese Ryūji Sonoda in the final . Also at the European Championships in 1994 Hüseynov reached the final and lost there against the Italian Girolamo Giovinazzo . In 1995 he finished fifth at the World Championships in Chiba , he lost the battle for bronze to Ryūji Sonoda. In 1996 at the Olympic Games in Atlanta Hüseynov played two fights and was eliminated after one victory and one defeat.

He was still active until 2000, but could no longer build on his great successes. After his career he worked as a judo trainer, so from 2007 he was in charge of the Italian judoka.
