Nathanaël (writer)
Nathanaël (* 1970 in Montréal ) is a Canadian writer , essayist , translator and lecturer . Nathanaël is her chosen name; some of her work appeared under her real name Nathalie Stephens . She lives and teaches in Chicago .
Life and work
Nathanaël was born Nathalie Stephens in 1970 in Montréal. She studied literature at Université Lumière Lyon 2 and York University in Toronto .
She writes poetry, prose, cross-genre texts (l'entre-genre) and essays - in French and English . Her works have been translated into Bulgarian , Basque , Greek , Portuguese , Slovenian and Spanish . Her book Underground was shortlisted for the Grand Prix du Salon du livre de Toronto in 2000 , and L'injure was shortlisted for the Prix Trillium and the Prix Alain-Grandbois in 2005. Your volume of poetry ... s'arrête? Ever won the Prix Alain-Grandbois in 2008.
Nathanaël translated John Keene , Trish Salah , Reginald Gibbons , Daniel Borzutzky , Rachel Gontijo Araújo , Gail Scot , Bhanu Kapil and R. M. Vaughan into French, Hervé Guibert , Danielle Collobert , Hilda Hilst , Édouard Glissant and Catherine Mavrikakis into English. Her translation of Danielle Collobert's Murder (2013) was in the final of the Best Translated Book Award 2014. She received grants from the PEN American Center and the Center National du Livre de France for the translation of Hervé Guibert's The Mausoleum of Lovers .
Nathanaël teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago , a. a. with the focus on translatability and mistranslation , language and body, the personal pronoun of the first person and representation of violence . She is co-editor of the magazine Recours au poème ( France ) and the magazine task ( USA ).
