from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nathaniel Herman Frank (born March 18, 1903 in Boston , † February 19, 1984 in Brookline (Massachusetts) ) was an American physicist .

Life

Nathaniel H. Frank studied physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and worked there until his retirement in 1968. After initially working as an assistant in the Department of Electrical Engineering after obtaining his bachelor's degree , he switched to physics in the mid-1920s. After a one-year research stay with Arnold Sommerfeld in Munich , where in particular some theoretical work on the change in resistance of metals in magnetic fields was written, he became an "Assistant Professor" in 1930. In 1944 he became a full professor at MIT. In 1935 he was a guest at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton . During the Second World War he worked from 1941 to 1943 at the Radiation Laboratory at MIT, where the propagation of microwaves was studied. From 1943 to 1944 he was subordinate to the War Ministry, where he participated in the development of radar devices .

He headed the physics department at MIT from 1952 to 1962.

Frank earned particular services in developing university teaching in physics in the USA. He is the author of several textbooks on theoretical physics. Some were made in co-authorship with John C. Slater .

In 1936 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . He was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1949.
