Nathaniel Meyer Freiherr von Rothschild (born October 26, 1836 in Frankfurt am Main ; † June 13, 1905 in Vienna ) was the eldest son of the banker Anselm Salomon Freiherr von Rothschild (1803-1874), the founder of the Austrian Creditanstalt for Trade and Industry in Vienna.

Life

In contrast to his brother Albert Salomon Anselm Freiherr von Rothschild (1844–1911), he was little interested in banking and left the bank to work exclusively as an art collector, builder, travel writer, amateur photographer, flower grower and generous patron. His Rothschild gardens, equipped with large greenhouses, on the Hohe Warte in Vienna in the 19th district , which were "Aryanized" after Austria's annex to Nazi Germany and later destroyed in the war, were well known.

From 1872 to 1884 he had the Palais Nathaniel Rothschild in Theresianumgasse 14-16 in the 4th district of Vienna built by the French architect Jean Girette , where he housed his art collection (partly inherited from his father). From 1884 to 1889 his luxurious Hinterleiten Castle (now also called Rothschild Castle ) was built as a natural and brick building in the Louis XIII style in Reichenau an der Rax ( Lower Austria ), but was not completed and by Rothschild in 1890 to the Austro-Hungarian War Ministry as a home for disabled subaltern officers donated. The Neurological Hospital of the City of Vienna on Rosenhügel , which still exists today, and since 2002 the Nathaniel Freiherr von Rothschild Foundation for the Mentally Ill - Neurological Center of the City of Vienna , goes back to a Rothschild foundation.

Rothschild also played an essential role in establishing the first football club in Austria, First Vienna FC 1894 , which was founded on August 22, 1894 by Rothschild's gardener in Vienna-Döbling. Rothschild and the general manager of the Rothschild banking house acted as godparents. The club colors were set with blue and yellow, the colors of the Rothschild family crest. The club still plays with these colors in the Hohe Warte stadium .

Rothschild died unmarried and childless in 1905.
