The Berliner National-Zeitung was a liberal German daily newspaper that appeared in Berlin from 1848 to 1938.

history

The publisher Bernhard Wolff founded the Berliner National-Zeitung on April 1, 1848 , together with the journalist Theodor Mügge , the city councilor Heinrich Runge , the pedagogue Friedrich Diesterweg , the private lecturer Carl Nauwerck and the writer David Kalisch . As a product of the March Revolution , it is considered to be one of the earliest examples of the party-related opinion press of a moderately liberal direction. The National-Zeitung owes the fact that it survived the revolutionary period primarily to its strong financial base in the form of a stock corporation with a share capital of 10,000  thalers .

It was the first newspaper in Berlin to publish two issues a day and in 1850, with around 10,000 subscribers, it was one of the city's highest-circulation newspapers. That year it was bought by the publisher Bernhard Wolff.

Under Wolff, who was also the founder of Wolff's telegraph office , the National-Zeitung developed into the house paper of the National Liberal Party in Prussia in the 1860s . Its authors included August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben , Julius Rodenberg , Siegfried Samosch and Franz Kugler , a nephew of the art historian Franz Kugler . In 1874 the national newspaper took over the Spenersche Zeitung , one of the oldest newspapers in Berlin. A year later, the politician and publicist Friedrich Dernburg took over the chief editor.

After the death of Bernhard Wolff in May 1879, it passed into the possession of his nephew Ferdinand Salomon, who sold it in 1890 to a stock corporation founded by leading national liberals. Friedrich Dernburg was replaced in the same year by Siegfried Köbner , who was close to Rudolf von Bennigsen . From 1903 Arthur Dix was the chief editor of the newspaper.

Due to falling circulation, the National-Zeitung was merged with Rudolf Mosses 8 o'clock-Abendblatt in 1910 . The time of publication has been moved to the evening. This created the capital's first late evening paper. In September 1938 the publication had to be stopped.
