National Progressive Party (Finland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Progressive Party (also National Progressive Party, Finnish: Kansallinen Edistyspuolue ) was a liberal party that existed in Finland from 1918 to 1951 .

The party was founded after the Finnish Civil War on December 8, 1918 by the Republican majority within the Young Finnish Party . Proponents of a monarchy in Finland founded the National Collection Party . Although the party achieved rather low election results, because of its status as a “neutral” party between left and right, Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg and Risto Ryti were two presidents. In the spring of 1951 the party dissolved. Most of the members became members of the People's Party of Finland ( Suomen Kansanpuolue ), a minority under Sakari Tuomioja founded the Liberal League ( Vapaamielisten Liitto ).

From 1947 until its dissolution in 1951, the party was a member of the Liberal International .
