After the City Council in 1376 decided to build an outer defensive wall in the Brunswick region with the militia, far ahead of the actual city fortifications, one was around 1381 or 1385 dungeon built. The tower was about three miles southwest of the city gates.

During the frequent clashes between the city of Braunschweig and the dukes of the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , the keep was destroyed several times by ducal troops: in 1492 by Heinrich the Elder (1463-1514) and in 1550 by Heinrich the Younger (1489-1568).

When in September 1604, during a violent inner-city conflict, the Brunswick mayor Henning Brabandt (around 1550-1604) fled the city, he was caught by his opponents at the Rothenburg Tower and a few days later, on September 17, 1604, after cruel torture executed on the Hagenmarkt .

At the end of the 18th century the Landwehr lost its military importance. The defense towers, including the Rothenburg, were razed . The outbuildings went into private ownership and served as an inn. In 1780 the Rothenburg was first mentioned as an inn and in the 19th century the innkeeper was able to collect road money from travelers , a kind of toll .

In the middle of the 20th century, the Rothenburg inn was located on almost completely undeveloped land, between the Braunschweig city center and the municipality of Broitzem, which was independent until 1974. Due to the construction of the Weststadt since the 1960s, the site is now fully integrated into the built-up urban area of Braunschweig. The Rothenburg is still used today as an inn.
