National AIDS Advisory Council

The National AIDS Council accompanied in Germany from 1987 to 2016 as an advisory body of the Federal Ministry of Health , the policy of the Federal Government to combat HIV and AIDS .

The interdisciplinary advisory board - consisting of 17 experts from the fields of research, medical care, public health services, ethics, law, social sciences and people from civil society - was set up in the spring of 1987 on the basis of the coalition agreement of the 11th legislative period of the German Bundestag. With its statements, especially on new or controversially discussed issues, the National AIDS Advisory Board provided important support in the design and implementation of a technically sound and effective strategy, the National AIDS Advisory Board has achieved social and professional consensus on the strategy and implementation of the German Contributed to the fight against HIV / AIDS.

The last meeting of the National AIDS Advisory Council took place on November 21, 2016. Federal Minister of Health Hermann Gröhe (CDU) also announced a new committee that is not solely focused on HIV / AIDS to support the implementation of the “Strategy to contain HIV, hepatitis B and C and other sexually transmitted infections” adopted in April 2016 .

The German AIDS-Hilfe had campaigned for a further development of the National AIDS Committee. At its general meeting in October 2016, it last adopted a corresponding resolution from its self-help committee, PositHIVe Faces, as well as from the participants in the self-help conference “Positive Encounters” Hamburg 2016. This calls for a committee to be set up as the successor to the National AIDS Advisory Council in order to ensure involvement to ensure self-help in the state HIV / AIDS policy.
