Aluminum sodium silicate (also sodium aluminum silicate ) describes a chemical compound from the group of aluminosilicates with a variable water of crystallization content , which is used as a food additive under the abbreviation E 554 .
Occurrence
Aluminum sodium silicate occurs naturally as the minerals trinepheline and carnegieite .
Extraction and presentation
Aluminum sodium silicate can be obtained by hydrothermal synthesis from sodium hydroxide , aluminum oxide and silicon dioxide or from water glass and sodium aluminate .

Depending on how it is manufactured, aluminum sodium silicate is a crystalline or amorphous white odorless solid that is practically insoluble in water, but dissolves in acids with decomposition. Its aqueous dispersion has an alkaline reaction.
use
Aluminum sodium silicate is used as a filler in industry. It is approved in the EU as a food additive with the number E 554 with maximum quantity restrictions of 10 grams per kilogram for certain foods, for seasonings and food supplements also without maximum quantity restriction ( quantum satis ). Sodium aluminum silicates are used in paper production to improve the optical properties and to reduce the bleeding through of printing inks. They are also used as water softeners in detergents.
