Sodium nitride is an unstable inorganic chemical compound of sodium from the group of nitrides .

Extraction and presentation

Sodium nitride can be obtained by the thermal decomposition of sodium azide or the reaction of sodium azide with sodium.

It is also possible to produce it by reacting sodium with nitrogen in an electrical discharge.

A more recent synthesis describes the representation in a vacuum chamber in which atomic sodium is applied with nitrogen to a cooled sapphire substrate and then warmed to room temperature.

Sodium nitride is a dark blue solid. It is extremely unstable and decomposes into its elements when heated slightly. Its crystal structure can be assigned to the anti- rhenium (VI) oxide type and is characterized by extremely low space filling.
