The nature reserve Breiter Hagen (Attendorn) is a 20.28 hectare nature reserve (NSG) northeast of Röllecken in the city of Attendorn . The area was designated as a NSG in 1981, 1985 and 2003 by the Arnsberg district government . In 2006, with the landscape plan No. 3 Attendorn - Heggen - Helden, another NSG designation was carried out by the Olpe district . Since 2004 the NSG has been one of ten sub-areas of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area beech forests, limestone semi -dry grasslands and rocks south of Finnentrop (DE-4813-301).

The Ruhr-Sieg route lies directly on the eastern border of the NSG . The south-east border of the NSG is also the border between the city of Attendorn and the city of Lennestadt . The Breiter Hagen nature reserve (Lennestadt) is directly adjacent to the urban area of Lennestadt . Borghausen Castle is located on its north-western spur, to the north it is bounded by the Lenneaue .

The NSG is mainly a forest area with woodruff and orchid beech forest . It is at an altitude of 250 to 310  m above sea level. NN and has many wood-free rocks. Gorge forest and mixed hillside forests exist on rubble heaps. There are also areas in the forest with oak forest, oak-hornbeam coppice and medium-sized forest . Lime grass is available in small areas.

Protection purpose

The NSG is intended to protect nationally significant habitats and habitats of rare and endangered animals and plants typical of the landscape. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
