The nature reserve Breiter Hagen (Lennestadt) is a 9.76 hectare nature reserve (NSG) west of Grevenbrück in the city of Lennestadt . The area was designated as a NSG in 1981, 1985 and 2003 by the Arnsberg district government . Since 2004 the NSG has been one of ten sub-areas of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area beech forests, limestone semi -dry grasslands and rocks south of Finnentrop (DE-4813-301). The north-western border of the NSG is also the border between the cities of Lennestadt and Attendorn . The nature reserve Breiter Hagen (Attendorn) is directly connected to the Attendorn urban area . The Ruhr-Sieg route in the Lenneaue lies directly on the northeast border of the NSG . The ruins of Peperburg Castle are on its south-eastern spur .

The NSG is mainly a forest area with woodruff and orchid beech forest . It is at an altitude of 250 to 310  m above sea level. NN and has many wood-free rocks. Gorge forest and mixed hillside forests exist on rubble heaps. There are also areas in the forest with oak forest, oak-hornbeam coppice and medium-sized forest . Lime grass is available in small areas.

Protection purpose

The NSG is intended to protect nationally significant habitats and habitats of rare and endangered animals and plants typical of the landscape. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
