The nature reserve (NSG) Melbecke and Rübenkamp is located south of Melbecke and north of Elspe , in Lennestadt in the Olpe district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The 94.9649 hectare area with the key number OE-012 is located east of the Melbecke , a tributary of the Elspebach . The NSG was designated as NSG for the first time in 1981 by the Arnsberg district government . With the landscape plan Elsper Senke - Lennebergland. No. 2 , the NSG was shown again in 2006. The area was designated because of its red beech forests and limestone grasslands . In the southeast, the NSG borders directly on the grounds of the Elspe Festival with its Karl May Festival. The NSG is one of ten sub-areas of the fauna-flora-habitat area, beech forests, limestone semi -dry grasslands and rocks south of Finnentrop (DE-4813-301).

The Melbecke sub-area is shaped by the Melbecke creek valley and its valley slopes. There are intensive hay meadows on the valley floor and deciduous forests on the slopes. In some areas there are also remnants of limestone grasslands, which are mostly overgrown due to a lack of grazing. In the dry side valley in the southwest, there is grazed poor grassland with small rock heads interspersed with it, as well as a narrow limestone lawn on the edge of the forest. The Melbecke creek itself is close to nature, with wood on the banks largely missing. Herb-rich old beech forests of various beech forest communities with interspersed red spruce areas grow on the mostly steep and rocky slopes of the valley . The beech forest companies are woodruff beech forests, mostly in hollows, orchid beech forests on steep slopes facing south and spring pea beech forests. In the partial area there are many rocks and rubble areas.

In the Rübenkamp sub-area, on the Rübenkamp hilltop, there are extensive limestone grasslands made of mass limestone . This limestone grassland in a level to slightly south-facing location is divided into several areas by spruce and maple forest and a fatty willow. This limestone grassland is the largest in the Attendorn-Elsper limestone area. Thousands of junipers stand in the limestone grassland . Furthermore, many rare and endangered plant species occur in the poor grassland. On the western slope in the direction of Melbeck Valley there are predominantly old spruce forests. Beech areas can also be found in the limestone rock area. The beech areas are designed as woodruff or orchid beech forests. On the south-eastern slope of Rübenkamp there is a mixed forest, a larger orchid-beech forest and a small hornbeam coppice with plant species from the orchid-beech forest.

Bird species

In the NSG, the rare birds breeding red kites , gray-headed woodpecker and red-backed shrike .

Prohibitions and Commandments

It is forbidden in the NSG to plant tree species that are not typical of the habitat. The landscape plan also stipulated requirements for the protection of the area. In hardwood stands that are more than 120 years old, ten strong trees per hectare, especially eyrie and cave trees, must be determined which are not felled. These trees should also remain in the forest as dead wood until the decay phase. Coniferous forest stands are to be converted into hardwood stands. Shrubby limestone grasslands are to be cleared of trees, and the cuttings must be removed from the area. Lean-lime lawns are to be grazed with sheep, whereby no paddock and no night pen may take place in the NSG.
