The Navicula is a research vessel of the Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee (NIOZ).
description
The ship was built in 1981 under the hull number 480 at the Visscher & Zoon shipyard in Zwartsluis. The ship is primarily used for research work in the Dutch Wadden Sea , the coastal waters and the inland waters of the Rhine-Meuse Delta .
The deck superstructures are in the front half of the ship. A dry and a wet laboratory are set up here. An open working deck is located behind the superstructure. The ship is equipped with a stern boom with various lifting tools. There is space on deck for a 20-foot laboratory container. The ship carries a rigid inflatable boat that can be used as a work boat .
There is space on board for three crew members and eight scientists.
The ship is propelled by two Caterpillar diesel engines that act on two fixed propellers via reduction gears .
The ship is named after the species of diatoms .
