Negazione were an Italian hardcore punk band from Turin that was active from 1983 to 1992. The band gained an excellent live reputation and is considered one of the most important and influential European hardcore bands. Her EP Tutti Pazzi and the album Lo Spirito Continua are classics of the genre.

history

In 1983 Roberto “Tax” Farano (guitar) and Orlando Furioso (drums) left their band 5 ° Braccio and founded Negazione with Guido “Zazzo” Sassola (vocals) and Marco Mathieu (bass), who had previously played for AntiStato .

Negazione belonged to the first generation of Italian hardcore bands with bands like Declino (where Farano played drums), Raw Power and Cheetah Chrome Motherfuckers . Influenced by American hardcore, these Italian bands were the first European punk bands outside of England to play their music faster and more extreme, lyrically and in their attitude more radical and political and also differed significantly from traditional punks in terms of fashion. Although Negazione's lyrics were often of a personal nature, the band saw themselves, especially in the early years, as a political band. They supported the squatter scene and some of the band members lived in squats.

Negazione published their first songs in 1983. 6 tracks appear on the tape sampler L'Incubo Continua by Disforia Tapes .

In early 1984, drummer Furioso left the band and was replaced by Michele D'Alessio. With him the band recorded the songs for Mucchio Selvaggio . The Split - Tape with Declino was established in August 1984 by Ossa Rotte tapes released. The band began to give first concerts outside of Italy and performed in Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands.

After Negazione recorded their first EP Tutti Pazzi with D'Alessio in 1985 , the band changed drummers again and Fabrizio Fiegl (previously drummer at Upset Noise ) joined the band. In 1985 the band stayed mainly in Amsterdam, where they recorded their second EP Condanati a morte nel vostro quieto vivere . Negazione tours Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Spain.

In early 1986 the English label Children of the Revolution Records released the Mucchio Selvaggio Tape as a vinyl LP . Negazione recorded their first album Lo Spirito Continua in Amsterdam . Like the Condanati a morte ... EP, the album was produced by Dolf Planteijdt. In Europe the record was released by the Dutch label Konkampfel and in the USA by Mordam Records . Lo Spirito Continua was included in the list of the "100 best Italian albums" by the Italian edition of Rolling Stone in 2012; the critic Massimiliano Osini calls the record "one of the best albums of Italian rock". Negazione tour almost continuously throughout Western Europe and for the first time also England. In 1987 the Californian label New Beginning Records released the EP Nightmare . The songs on Nightmare are the same as on Condanati a morte ..., only the song Ancora Qui has been replaced by a live version by Tutti Pazzi .

The follow-up album Little Dreamer was released in 1988 on the German label We Bite Records . It was produced by Theo van Rock, the later longtime live and studio producer of the Rollins Band . After the recordings of Little Dreamer , another drummer left the band and Rowdy James, the drummer of the Dutch band Pandemonium , temporarily took Fiegl's place. Theo van Rock was also the sound engineer for the Dutch band Gore , and with them Negazione went on a European tour in the winter of 1988/89.

After the tour, Elvin Betty replaced the interim drummer James. With Betty, Negazione recorded the EP Behind The Door and the single Semper In Bilico in April 1989 , both of which were produced by Van Rock and published by We Bite . In the same year, We Bite released the compilation album Wild Bunch (English for Mucchio Selvaggio), on which the songs by Mucchio Selvaggio, Tutti Pazzi and Condanati a morte ... were included. After almost a year Elvin Betty left the band and Negazione found a new drummer in Giovanni "Jeff" Pellino.

With Pellino on drums, 100% was created in 1990 , the last Negazione album. Again produced by Van Rock, the record was released in Europe and the US on We Bite , but in Italy it was released by Godhead . Godheat also brought a single-sided promotional single out on the Negazione I think I see the Light of Cat Stevens covers. I think I see the Light is also included as a bonus track on the CD version of 100% . Negazione are doing a 30-concert tour of the United States together with the Canadian hardcore band DOA .

In 1991 Negazione changed the drummer for the last time, Massimo Ferrusi (previously with the Stinky Rats and Indigesti ) replaced Jeff Pellino. In September of that year Negazione played as opening act for AC / DC and Metallica in front of 45,000 spectators at Monsters of Rock in Modena.

After nine years and almost 1,000 concerts, Negazione disbanded in 1992. The band had become too well known to continue working independently , but the musicians refused to sign with a major label , despite various offers. Since there were also more and more personal arguments within the band, Sassola, Farano and Mathieu decided to end the chapter Negazione and gave their farewell concert on July 19, 1992.

After the end of the band

Guitarist Roberto Farrano joined the Italian band Fluxus after Negazione broke up . In 1996 he founded the band Angeli with drummer Massimo Ferrusi . Farano played the guitar and did the vocals. He wrote all of the music and lyrics for Angeli, which broke up in 1999 after the release of two albums. Since 2002 he has been running the official website Negazione.com.

Singer Guido Sassola played briefly with the Peggio Punx after Negazione .

Bassist Marco Mathieu turned to journalism. Today he writes for La Repubblica, among others, and has published several books. On July 15, 2017, Mathieu had an accident in a traffic accident in Rome. The 53-year-old at the time of the accident has been in a coma since then (as of March 2019). On the occasion of Mathieu's 55th birthday, Roberto Farrano and guitarist Paolo Spaccamonti released the 10 '' EP Young till I die on March 6, 2019 , which is dedicated to their mutual friend. Other friends of Mathieu participated in the making of the record, such as the graphic artist Deemo, who designed the covers of the early Negazione publications, and the photographer Vittorio Catti, who also worked with the band during Negazione's active time. In addition to the title song written in memory of Mathieu, the record also contains a reinterpretation of the Negazione song Lo Spirito Continua , which Mathieu and Farrano wrote together.

After his time with Negazione, drummer Fabrizio Fiegl was active as DJ Fabri in the reggae / dance hall scene and was a member of the group Camels In Effect . He died in 2011 as a result of a heart attack. He left behind his wife and a son.

After leaving Negazione, drummer Giovanni Pellino celebrated success as a rapper and pop musician under the pseudonym Neffa .

In 2002 the Italian label V2 Records released the best-of CD Tutti Pazzi - Negazione 1983-92 .

Negazione (Sassola, Farano and Mathieu) published Il giorno del sole in 2012 , a book in which they tell the story of the band from 1984 to 1988 in photos and texts. The book came with a best-of CD with songs from this period.

2017 brings the Italian label Contempo Records the box set La Nostra Vita . It contains vinyl reprints of the EPs Tutti Pazzi , Condanati a morte ... , Semper in bilico and Behind the door as well as the albums Lo Spirito Continua , Little Dreamer and 100% . The box also contains a tape with the songs of Mucchio Selvaggio , a T-shirt, a large-format booklet with liner notes and photos, and a poster.

Also in 2017, Negazione published their complete discography in digital form on the Bandcamp music platform , which contains all of the band's official publications. In the following years, the band expanded this publication to include a radio session from the Turin radio station Radio Populare from 1987, a compilation of recordings in the first lineup with drummer Orlando Furioso, which were made in 1983, as well as several live recordings of entire concerts, recorded in Paris and Birmingham, among others , Grenoble and Eindhoven.
