Negu Gorriak was a Basque underground crossover band formed in Guipuzcoa in the Spanish Basque Country in 1990 . The name is Basque for “hard winter” or “red winter” (from verses by Bertolt Brecht's Die Nachtlager ). Musically they combined rock with hip-hop and reggae .

Band history

Negu Gorriak were founded in February 1990 by the brothers Fermin ( vocals ) and Iñigo Muguruza ( guitar , background vocals ) together with Kaki Arkarazo (guitar), who had previously played together in Kortatu .

They had their first “presentation” of their music in the bus on a trip (organized by the band members) to a concert by Public Enemy , during which the band presented their first album , which is currently being recorded .

In June of the same year Negu Gorriak appeared (clearly influenced by old school hip-hop with the use of a drum computer and numerous samples ), followed by the first concert in the high-security prison "Herrera de la Mancha" in Ciudad Real . In this solidarity concert in support of Basque prisoners, Mikel "Anestesia" ( electric bass ) played with the band for the first time .

In 1991 Mikel “Bap !!” was recorded on drums and - true to their DIY principles - they founded their own label Esan Ozenki (inspired by Minor Threats Dischord Records and Alternative Tentacles of the Dead Kennedys ), on which they also recorded their next album Gure Jarrera Recordings. This record made them famous as a Basque band, but it also burned them in court for the song Ustelkeria .

Ustelkeria is a song about the Spanish Colonel of the Guardia Civil Enrique Rodríguez Galindo, in which Negu Gorriak accused him of selling stolen cocaine to finance the GAL terrorist group . In 1993 they were sued by Galindo for this and sentenced to pay 15 million pesetas. However, this judgment was overturned in 2001 and the band acquitted.

With the release of their second record, they went on the Gora Herria - Power to the People tour, which took them through the Basque Country , France , Switzerland , Italy , Germany , the United Kingdom , Ireland and Cuba and finally with performances in Madrid , Barcelona and Bilbao ended.

In December 1991 the EP Gora Herria was released , in which Manu Chao also has a guest appearance. This album can be seen as a link between her old works and the following, which are less angry and aggressive.

The following tour Borreruak Baditu Milaka Aurpegi , about which the press reported in detail, aroused high expectations. After that, Negu Gorriak released their only live album Hipokrisiari Stop! .

In 1994 Idea Zabaldu was released , which shows the long stays of the band in Latin America (and the Zapatista revolution). This was their last album with new songs, followed only by Salam Agur , on which they covered pieces by their friends and musical idols (like The Who , Public Enemy , Redskins and Dead Kennedys ).

Then the band broke up - just like Kortatu on the grounds that they wanted to avoid “creative stagnation”. However, there were still four concerts in 2001 with which they celebrated the acquittal in the trial against Enrique Galindo.
