Kortatu was a Basque ska punk band formed in Irun , Guipuzcoa in the Spanish Basque Country in 1984 . The band's name comes from the nickname of an ETA member who died in the hands of the Spanish police .

Because of their lyrics, some of which are sung in Basque , in which they also support Basque independence, they are considered part of radical Basque rock .

Their style is characterized by an explosive mixture of ska and punk elements , which are underpinned by occasional reggae interludes.

Band history

Kortatu was founded in 1984 by the brothers Fermin ( vocals , guitar ) and Iñigo Muguruza ( electric bass , background vocals ) together with Treku Armendariz ( drums ).

Soon after, they recorded their first demo and in 1985 toured the entire Basque Country with performances at various festivals and trips to Madrid and Barcelona .

In the same year they recorded their first album " Kortatu ". This record is still largely sung in Spanish and made it known in the country (it was also voted record of the year by some magazines ). Kortatu sometimes played in front of 15,000 spectators.

In 1986 a tour of Europe followed with concerts in Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands and the publication of two works: the maxi single " A la calle " and the LP " El estado de las cosas " (also mostly in Spanish). At the latest with this record they became known all over Spain .

They spent the whole of 1987 on tour (also in France and again in Switzerland and Germany). Another album - " A Front Line Compilation " - was put together for European distribution from existing material.

In 1988 her third album " Kolpez kolpe " followed, her first album in Basque. The sound has also evolved; there are now some wind instruments too . In the following tour they recorded the double LP " Azken guda dantza " (on their last of about 280 concerts) . This was voted one of the best live albums by Maximum Rock & Roll magazine .

In the same year the band broke up - at the height of their popularity - in order to avoid “creative stagnation” (to find themselves mostly in the follow-up project Negu Gorriak in 1990 ).
