Negură Bunget was a metal band from Romania .

Band history

The band was founded in 1995 in Timisoara by Hupogrammos Disciple's (vocals, guitars) and Gabriel “Negru” Mafa (drums) under the name Wiccan Rede . After releasing the first demo From Transilvanian Forests as a Wiccan Rede, the band changed the name to Negură Bunget, which means “black fog coming from the deep forest” in old Romanian.

In June 1995 Negură Bunget had their first appearance in Buzău . The first album , Zîrnindu-să , was recorded in October 1996 and released in late 1996 through Bestial Records. In December 1998 Negură Bunget released an EP called Sala Molksa . The album was recorded from June to August 1998 and also released on Bestial Records. Together with the third official member, Spurcatu, the five tracks on the CD showed a more complex, aggressive sound.

After that, the band toured across Europe with the 2000 release of the album Măiastru Sfetnic . Măiastru Sfetnic also led to a 3-album contract with the Italian label code666 records. In June 2002 the band re-entered the studio to record their fourth album, 'N Crugu Bradului . The four songs on the album represent the four seasons . In 2005 the EP Înarborat Kosmos, limited to 734 units, hit stores. After a few months of waiting, the album OM was finally released in 2006 , which was retrospectively voted the sixth best album of the decade 2000–2009 by the British music magazine Terrorizer .

At the end of September 2007, before the expiry of the contract with Code666, the signing of a new contract with Prophecy Productions sub-label Lupus Lounge was announced. During their European tour in 2008 the band was a nationalist or Nazi accused related convictions, which Emiliano Lanzoni of Code666 called ridiculous. Negură Bunget stands for humanity, nature and emotions and has never supported Nazi or fascist organizations; on the side of the band an official declaration can be found since 2002. At the end of 2008, Lupus Lounge released new editions of From Transilvanian Forests , Zîrnindu-să (incl. Bonus CD), Sala Molksa (incl. Bonus CD) and Măiastru Sfetnic as well as a limited collector's box containing these albums. In March 2010, a reinterpretation of Măiastru Sfetnic was also released via Lupus Lounge with Maiestrit, as well as Code666 Virstele Pamintului , the follow-up album to OM , exclusively containing new compositions .

On March 21, 2017, Tibor Kati, the band's singer, keyboardist and guitarist since 2013, announced via Facebook that the band's founder Gabriel “Negru” Mafa had died on the same day at the age of 42. As a result, the band also announced their breakup.

style

As a Wiccan Rede, the band oriented itself towards symphonic black metal , on Zîrnindu-să they largely retained this style. Over the years, the band's music became increasingly complex and progressive . The symphonic elements disappeared in favor of quiet keyboard passages, nature noises, folk sounds and percussion .

The band sees itself connected to the Black Metal ethos, as they see it as a path of spiritual search, but due to the lack of satanic lyrics, they themselves cannot be assigned to Black Metal. Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann from Rock Hard assigns the band to Pagan Metal , but they hardly deal with pagan topics, but is more focused on natural mysticism . One of their albums is called Virstele Pamintului (Romanian 'Age of the Earth'), as the band dealt with the different levels of reality over time and their connections through nature and tradition, among other things. Of fundamental importance for the band are a spiritual, esoteric and historical element, and within these other elements such as nature and folklore . The mix of the two main elements is referred to by the band as their ideology , as their music is a reflection of their ideas “and not the other way around,” as Negru points out. The band describes Transylvanian spirituality as one of the most important concepts for them, under which they summarize a complex of practices and beliefs gathered in their country over the millennia. As her essence she describes immortality, blood and wisdom.
