Nehemiah Anton Nobel

Nehemia Anton Nobel (born November 8, 1871 in Nagyatád , Somogy County, Hungary , † January 24, 1922 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a rabbi , preacher and Jewish scholar.

Life

Nehemia Tzvi Anton , son of Rabbi Josef Nobel (1839-1917), was a conservative, modern Orthodox rabbi, famous pulpit speaker, Jewish scholar and at the same time a German patriot. He grew up in Halberstadt , studied in Berlin and Marburg and graduated with a doctorate.

He worked as a preacher first in Cologne , then in Leipzig and Hamburg . From 1910 (until 1922) he was a rabbi in Frankfurt / M., Where he later held a teaching position for Jewish religious studies and ethics at the university.

He was one of the first religious Zionists and, together with Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig, represented the cultural Zionism launched by Achad Haam . The historian Rachel Heuberger mentions his "attempt to create a nostalgic synthesis between historical Judaism and modern culture".
