Nelson Daniel Gutiérrez Luongo (born April 13, 1962 in Montevideo , Uruguay ) is a former Uruguayan football player .

Club career

The 1.85 meter tall central defender began his club career in 1980 with the Uruguayan club Peñarol . With the Aurinegros Gutiérrez won the Uruguayan championship in 1981 and 1982 and the Copa Libertadores and the World Cup in 1982 . In 1985 he played for the Colombian club Atlético Nacional . 1985/86 and in the two following seasons he joined the Argentine capital city club River Plate . Here he and his teammates not only secured the Argentine championship title in 1986, but also prevailed in the Copa Libertadores that year . In the 1988/89 season, he completed 17 games (one goal) for Lazio in the Serie A . Within this league he then moved to Hellas Verona , where he was used in 27 league games in 1989/90 and scored three goals. He spent the next three seasons in Spain with CD Logroñés . In 1993 he returned to Uruguay to Peñarol, for which he played his last half series in the 1996 Clausura. There he was Uruguayan champion four times in a row (1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996). He also reached the finals for the Copa Conmebol twice with his teammates in 1993 and 1994 . At the end of his career he was still active in Apertura 1997 for Defensor Sporting .

National team

Gutiérrez took part with the Uruguayan junior selection at the Junior World Cup in Japan in 1979 and finished third with the team. Also at the junior soccer world championship in 1981 he came to the train for Uruguay's junior national team in all three group games and the quarter-final defeat against Romania. In the same year he won the U-20 South American Championship with Uruguay in 1981 . During the tournament he was used by coach Aníbal Gutiérrez Ponce in Ecuador seven times (no goal). The defender was also a member of the Uruguayan national soccer team . Overall, he completed from his debut on June 2, 1983 in the game in Asunción against the selection of Paraguay to his last appearance on June 25, 1990 in the World Cup game against the Italian national team 57 internationals for his home country. He didn't score a goal. With the Celeste he took part in the 1986 World Cup and the 1990 World Cup. Other tournaments in which he participated on the Uruguayan side were the Copa America in 1983 and 1987 , in which Uruguay won the title. He was also on the squad at the 1989 Copa America , the 1985 Artemio Franchi Cup and the 1983 and 1985 Copa Artigas .
