Nemesio Zúñiga Cazorla (born December 19, 1895 in San Salvador, Calca Province , Cusco Region , Peru ; † January 13, 1964 in Urubamba , Cusco Region, Peru) was a Peruvian Catholic priest and playwright who wrote about 40 Quechua dramas in Cusco -Quechua wrote.

Life

Nemesio Zúñiga Cazorla grew up on the hacienda of his father Mariano Zúñiga in the Lares Valley. He attended primary school in Calca and then the Catholic Colegio de San Francisco in the city of Cusco . Then he went to the Seminario de San Antonio Abad in Cuzco.

In Cuzco he wrote several dramas in Quechua , including Pitusira and (in 1915) Ccore Chchuspe ( Qurich'uspi , "Golden Fly", title after the name of one of the main characters), a play also by the playwright Inocencio Mamani in Puno was performed.

Zúñiga founded and directed the theater company Compañía Nacional Dramática Incaica , also known under the name Compañía Dramática Incaica Cuzco , which staged various plays in Lima and other cities in Peru, as well as in the neighboring countries of Bolivia (1917), Chile and Argentina. The pieces listed included Chuqui-illa by Luis Ochoa and Yahuar Huaccac (Yawarwaqaq) o el espectro indio by José Félix Silva Ayala , which premiered on June 16, 1920 in the Teatro Municipal of Callao (Teatro Vadell) . In 1930 Zúñiga became pastor of Urubamba and soon afterwards also mayor of the town, where he founded a new theater group with actors from the middle class. He wrote new dramas in Quechua, including Catacha (1930) and Ttica hina (1934).

From 1935 to 1937 he was a priest in San Pablo in the province of Canchis and then returned to Urubamba, where he remained as pastor until his death in 1964.

The dramas written and performed by Zúñiga had themes from the Catholic Church and the Inca Empire , including Christmas , Holy Week and the classic Quechua drama Apu Ollantay . According to César Itier, Nemesio Zúñiga Cazorla differed from most of the other playwrights of his time and before, who wrote in Quechua, in that he primarily addressed the "common people", which is why he was criticized by some of his colleagues. On the other hand, he was the most successful Quechua playwright of his time precisely because he addressed a wider audience.
