Neohenricia is a genus of plants fromthe afternoon flower family (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus honors the plant physiologist Marguerite Henrici (1892–1971).
description
The plants of the genus Neohenricia grow turf-like to creeping. They have short branches and numerous adventitious roots . The epidermis of the club-shaped to triangular, reddish green, orange or greyish green leaves is clearly warty.
The individual flowers have bracts that are almost as large as the leaves. There are five sepals . The flowers with a diameter of 15 to 17 millimeters open at night. Their petals are white to pale green. There are no thread-like staminodes . The stamens are white to yellow.
The capsule fruits are cup-shaped at the base and almost flat at the top. A fan cover and flaps are missing.
Systematics and distribution
The genus Neohenricia is distributed in South Africa in the southwest of the Northern Cape Province , in the south of the Free State Province and in the north of the Eastern Cape Province . The plants grow in crevices or shallow basins on sandstone or dolerite . The annual rainfall exceeds 200 millimeters. Precipitation falls at different times of the year.
The first description was published in 1938 by Harriet Margaret Louisa Bolus . The holotype is Neohenricia sibbettii . According to Heidrun Hartmann (* 1942) the genus Neohenricia includes the following species:
