The name was derived from Net for network and bone based on a backbone . The company originally comes from the greater Nuremberg area , where the company was based until 2001. To date, the company has 3 locations in Nuremberg alone. The central connection is via Frankfurt. The company developed from the Winkelhaid mailbox system, which has offered mailbox services since 1980. In 1985 was made the setting of the mailbox system services and focused on the provision of BTX pages on the screen Text Service of Deutsche Post. In 1987 an interactive medium was created by connecting an external computer to the Deutsche Post's BTX service. In 1993, the BTX service was renamed Datex-J and operated until 1995 when the postal monopoly came to an end. In 1995 the internet business area was opened up. Since 1995 the company has been active as a web hosting provider.

Netbone Digital was present with its own locations in Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Moldova, Russia, China and the USA. Both Germany and Switzerland were accessed through their own data centers. The locations in Liechtenstein, Austria, Moldova, Russia, China and the USA were colocation areas which were rented in carrier-neutral data centers and offer a total of space for a further 2,000 servers. The end customer business was discontinued in 2009 and the company offered its services almost exclusively for Internet providers .

The company operated three data centers of its own, two in Nuremberg and one in Switzerland, with a total capacity for 60,000 servers . In the area of Voice over IP VoIP , the company said it served over 90,000 customers. In 2007 Netbone Digital AG was founded, which acted as the managing body of the Netbone Digital Group. In addition to the Chur location, a location was also maintained in St. Moritz and Zurich . The Netbone Digital Group in turn consisted of 30 companies that provided a wide variety of IT services in the respective specialist areas.

The largest shareholder was the Worldcall with 50%. The remaining shares were privately owned by various investors. The external representation was carried out by Christian Todisco, who replaced the previous board member in December 2010. The company was registered under the UID CHE-113.766.141. The company's shares had their own security number .

At the end of 2012 the operative business was discontinued. The company no longer appears on the market and has become a pure holding company. The websites have also been deactivated since the end of 2012.

The holding company has been based in Winterthur in the canton of Zurich (Switzerland) since 2013.

In 2014, significant investments were made in new internet platforms and providers, and a data center location in Winterthur was financed, which was initially used exclusively for companies in the own group. The operation itself was outsourced to an independent GmbH. Since 2015, the location has also been available to external customers via a separate marketing company.

In 2015 the holding company was outsourced to another AG and NAG Netbone Digital Datacenter AG merged with Netdiscounter GmbH in Nuremberg. As a result, the company now has another data center location in Nuremberg.

A uniform branding has been created since 2016 and the company now works as NAG DATACENTER AG on both the Swiss and German sides. The company operates its own AS and is, for example, a RIPE and DeNIC member.

NAG DATACENTER AG's main activities are colocation services for business customers and internet providers.
