Netzarim ( Hebrew נצרים) was an Israeli settlement and kibbutz in the middle of the Israeli- occupied Gaza Strip from its inception until August 2005 . Due to its isolated location outside of the Jewish settlement blocks in the Gaza Strip, the place could only be reached by armored vehicles via a single road at the time.

history

1967 to 2005

After the conquest of the Gaza Strip during the Six Day War (1967) by ground forces of the Israeli army, Netzarim was founded on the evening of the Purim festival in 1972 by Nachal members of the Zionist youth organization HaSchomer HaTzair . In 1984 the place was converted into a civilian settlement and a national-religious kibbutz was created.

Netzarim was largely inhabited by Jewish settlers, who saw the settlement of Gaza as their duty and did not want to leave the area under any circumstances. By August 2005, 60 families with more than 400 people lived in the settlement. The settlement was connected to the Karni border crossing with a road. To protect the settlement, the Israeli occupation forces closed Saladin Street, which connected the south of the Gaza Strip with Gaza City. Palestinian houses on the street were demolished for this purpose.

The settlement and the nearby intersection ( English Netzarim junction ) ( 31 ° 27 '53 "  N , 34 ° 25' 37.2"  O ) were more frequent place of bloody collisions. For example, on September 27, 2000, an Israeli military patrol was attacked by Palestinian snipers at the intersection about two kilometers south-east of Netzarim, killing an Israeli soldier. However, an incident at the beginning of the Second Intifada attracted special worldwide attention , in which three days later, on September 30, 2000, the twelve-year-old Palestinian boy Muhammad al-Durrah in front of the camera of the Palestinian cameraman Talal Abu, who works for France 2 , at the same intersection Rahme was allegedly shot. Subsequent investigations suggest that the boy was either killed by bullets from Palestinian riflemen, or that the scene filmed by Palestinian cameraman Talal Abu Rahme of French state television France 2 was possibly staged.

On March 29, 2002, a Palestinian killed the two Israelis, Tuvia Weisner (79 years old) and Michael Orlinsky (70 years old) in a synagogue in Netzarim. They had gathered for Passover prayer when the perpetrator stabbed them with a knife and then escaped.

After an attack in 2003 in which three Israeli soldiers were killed, a discussion developed among the Israeli public about the point of keeping Netzarim going.

2005

As part of Israel's complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip , Netzarim was evacuated on August 22, 2005 as the last Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip. After all Israeli soldiers left, the Palestinians began demolishing houses and synagogues in what were once Jewish settlements . According to AFP reports, on September 12, 2005, a bulldozer entered the Netzarim settlement to tear down the synagogue that Palestinian youths had previously set on fire.
