Neu-Galow Castle in 1938

Neu-Galow (Neugalow) is a former manor in today's Uckermark district .

history

Together with the town of Alt-Galow, it used to belong to Gut Crussow as a Vorwerk . In 1913, Elgar von Dalwigk acquired Neu-Galow, and from him it passed on to his descendants. In 1945 it was expropriated and divided as part of the land reform . The farm buildings of the former manor were almost completely demolished. Neu-Galow belonged to the community of Stützkow , which was reclassified to the community of Schöneberg on June 1, 1973 . Since December 31, 2001, the previously independent communities of Felchow and Flemsdorf and the Johannishof settlement have also been part of this .

Neu-Galow Castle

Neu-Galow Castle was built in 1913 by Elgar von Dalwig in what was then a modern style. He lived there until his death in 1938. His daughter Ada von Dalwig , widowed von Voss, lived there until her death in 1941; then Neu-Galow was leased to the estate inspector Fritz Zauser from Württemberg.

The castle and many courtyard buildings were badly damaged by a British air raid on November 18, 1943 . The facade was closed again until the end of 1944, but the location on a height of the Oder after the relocation of the Eastern Front to the Oder (where it remained from February 5 to April 25, 1945) caused serious new damage. After the war, the ruin stood around unused for some time until it was finally completely torn down; the bricks were partly used as building material for settler houses.

The air attack on Neu-Galow cost the lives of 22 people, twelve of whom were girls from school classes from Berlin-Lichtenberg who were housed in the castle and who had been brought to alleged safety there just a month earlier as part of the children's area . With them three teachers, two maids, four kitchen women and the landlord's baby died.
