The new line Zagreb – Rijeka is a planned new line in Croatia . It should lead from the capital Zagreb to Rijeka . It is 51 kilometers shorter than the existing route and saves 360 meters in altitude. After its completion, the travel time of the passenger trains between Zagreb and Rijeka will be reduced from three and a half to one and a half hours.

planning

The new line is part of the pan-European corridor Vb , together with the Zagreb-Gyékényes railway to the north , which connects the Hungarian border to the Croatian capital . The total costs for the expansion of the route from Zagreb to the Hungarian border and the new construction of the high-speed line to Rijeka are estimated at 4.6 billion euros.

The new line is to run further south than the existing Zagreb – Rijeka line and thus lead through flatter terrain. In spite of the longer route, the route is shortened from 228 to around 165 kilometers. The travel time is to be reduced from three and a half to one and a half hours. The Croatian Railway ( Hrvatske Željeznice ) plans to use high-speed trains with a planned maximum speed of 200 km / h.

The construction of the line was announced for January 2007 and should be completed in 2012. Completion is no longer Template: future / in 5 yearsplanned for before 2025 .
