history

Altcunnewitz originated as a dead end village and was first mentioned in 1486 as Kunewicz . The founding time of the place is not determined. In 1538 the name changed to Konewitz , in 1791 a distinction is made between the villages of Alt- and Neu-Cunnewitz. The manor was incumbent on the Lautitz manor, ecclesiastically Altcunnewitz is subordinate to the Kittlitz Church . In the 18th century there were seven small farmers and 4 cottagers who lived on agriculture and cattle breeding. It was not until 1864 that some residents were able to replace their official duties in return for cash payments and acquire their own land.

Already before the Second World War, Altcunnewitz was administratively part of Lautitz. On March 1, 1994 Lautitz and its districts Alt- and Neucunnewitz and Mauschwitz were incorporated into Kittlitz. With the incorporation of Kittlitz into the city of Löbau on January 1, 2003, Altcunnewitz also came to Löbau and since the reorganization of the Löbau urban area on July 7, 2011, it has been one of 23 Löbau districts.

Neucunnewitz district

Neucunnewitz is located about 1 kilometer east of Altcunnewitz on the important Hohe Landstrasse , which already connected southern and central Germany with Wroclaw in the Middle Ages. From 1815 this old post road was the border between Saxony and Prussia , whereby a large part of the goods traffic to the southern Upper Lusatia was handled via the border and post station Neucunnewitz located on Saxon territory. In addition, there was a Vorwerk in the village , whose former owner, the von Gersdorff family, is remembered by a coat of arms on the building. Gottlob Rudolph von Gersdorff had acquired the Cunnewitz estate in 1727.

Neucunnewitz later belonged to Lautitz like Altcunnewitz and was incorporated into Kittlitz in 1994. In 2003 the place became part of Löbau and has also officially been part of the large district town since 2011.
