Architecture and history
A first water tower was built near the current location in 1906. It served to modernize the Harzgerode water supply and was built in connection with a waterworks . In 1898, many wells in Augustenstrasse, Brunnenstrasse and Weidenstrasse had to be closed because typhus had been found.
With the construction of a new plant for the Mitteldeutsche Leichtmetallwerke in Friederikenstrasse, a new elevated tank, today's New Water Tower, became necessary. In 1939 a construction company from Quedlinburg was commissioned. Construction work began in 1940. In addition to construction workers from Italy , prisoners of war were also used. The windows were built by the Harzgeroder master glass and carpenter Paul Trost. After four months, the topping-out ceremony was celebrated on October 10, 1940 . Food and drinks for the celebration were delivered by the White Horse . In May 1941, the final bill was made for a total of 84,122.25 Reichsmarks , the financing was made with the participation of the Reich Ministry of Labor and the State of Anhalt . The final completion took place in 1942 with the delivery of the entrance door made of oak wood by the Aschersleben joinery Bertram. The war-related delivery bottlenecks resulted in construction delays. The original concept envisaged the later construction of a hall of honor and the use as a lookout tower, but was ultimately not implemented.
The monumental-looking tower is reminiscent of a donjon , the facade is designed as broken stone . The capacity was 500 m³. The tower was filled by the natural pressure of the source area, so that mechanical support during filling was not required.
In the local register of monuments , the water tower is listed as a monument under registration number 094 84547 .
