The New Playhouse Königsberg was built as a modern theater building in Königsberg i. Pr. Erected. Today, as the Kaliningradski oblastnoi dramatitscheski teatr ( Russian Калининградский областной драматический театр ) it is an important venue in Kaliningrad .

The theater, an important building in the classical style, is located on the Theaterplatz behind the fountain. The building has columns with historicist composite capitals under a triangular gable. It has ornate stucco decorations that show well-known profiles of great playwrights. Felix Japha was one of the generous donors .

The building was built by the architect Otto Walter Kuckuck in place of the Kurowski villa on the Hufenallee 2 property in Königsberg. The inauguration took place on September 23, 1912, followed by a renovation in 1927. The building was badly damaged as a result of the air raids on Königsberg .

After the war , the building was restored according to plans by the architect PW Kuchtenkow (П. В. Кухтенков). The theater opened on April 22, 1960. The auditorium had 900 seats. In 2004 it was renewed for the 750th anniversary of Kaliningrad.

Use before the Second World War

First, the New Luisentheater moved into the building. Were played operas , operettas and plays . Under the merchant Bruno Dumont du Voitel it became a comic opera in 1923; but the company was not profitable. After the Berlin theater architect Oskar Kaufmann had expanded the auditorium to 980 seats, the ensemble of the Neues Schauspielhaus played in the building from 1927 .

Later it merged with the Königsberg City Theater to form the East Prussian State Theater . The New Playhouse was a renowned theater in the German Empire. Artists such as Hans Somborn , Hildegard Fränzel , Charlott Daudert , Max Pallenberg , Leopold Jessner (1915–1919), Albert Lieven , Hans Rameau , Claus Clausen , Ernst Rotmund , Albin Skoda , Hermann Wedekind , Friedrich Kalbfuß , Josef Gielen and Julia Serda worked here .

In 1960 the ensemble of the drama theater moved into the building, its current venue. The drama theater was founded in 1947 and began its first season with Simonov's A Boy from Our City ( Парень из нашего города ). It consisted largely of graduates from the Russian Academy of Theater Arts , one of the most traditional drama schools in Russia. The ensemble has participated in numerous theater festivals and has numerous excellent actors in its ranks. It performed works by Gorky , Schiller , Mayakovsky , Chekhov and Lermontov, among others .
